Looks like the Cubs will be able to get back the greatest manager they had in 50 years.

Let me quote something from 2008....

Quote:
Runners on first and second, down by a run, bottom of the ninth, one out.

The question of whether to bunt in this situation is probably subject to debate (not really, see below)

Keep in mind, however, that when the batter is Adam Dunn, there really ought not be any debate. Adam Dunn. Big guy (6’6″ 240 lbs), slugger type (.518 career slg).

That’s who manager Dusty asked to lay down a sacrifice bunt. The man who has two sacrifices his entire career; who’s leading the team in home runs and RBI. Yeah, that’s a good call, Dusty. Luckily for the Reds, Dusty’s managing didn’t get in the way.

After two unsuccessful sacrifice attempts, a frustrated Dunn chose to swing away.

Dunn’s backup plan sailed 449 feet into the right-field Sun Deck for a three-run walk-off home run, lifting the Reds to a dramatic 4-2 victory over the Indians before a standing-room-only crowd of 42,023, the 11th largest at Great American Ball Park.

How does someone who manages like this have a job?

21 years, 1 Pennant, with some GREAT talent over the years! and always ends up being fired?

I personally think he is lazy. I think he loves being a manager and hanging out with players, etc. He just lets everyone do what they want, but he is usually smart enough to take jobs that have talent in place.

When he came to Chicago and everyone was all excited, I was very hesitant. Why did a team that almost won the World Series with Dusty as the manager let him go? Of course, I do think I am much smarter than the guy who hired Dusty.

Too bad for Dusty

Maybe he'd make a decent commentator or something

He's a nice dude

They used to call him the "Hard Bake"

Some team should hire Dusty for the regular season and bring in LaRussa for the playoffs.

Not sure you should really be selling this because I don't think very many would buy it.

I would love to see Aggravated Bob's reaction to THE OAF laying down a sac bunt now.

The Reds haven't been the same since they let Jeff Keppinger walk.

They haven't been the same since trading stud pitcher Travis Wood for a bullpen arm.

Yep! Hopefully the Cubs can do the same with Russell.

Did Wood or that bullpen arm pitch meaningful games in September or October this year?

You keep touting this move for whatever reason. Wood was garbage in Cincy. It was a bullpen arm for a failed prospect. It worked out (for one season) for the Cubs. Good for them. This is the same type of move that bigfan bashes the Sox for on a monthly basis.

Can you go for one baseball thread without trying to turn into the Sox/Cubs meatball king?

Its not a Sox Cubs thing. He can't have it both ways. He can't tout the Wood deal as a great move by Theo, but then bash a team he doesn't like when the same kind of move-- picking up a guy off of the proverbial scrap heap-- works out for that team.

Reds made the playoffs in 3 of the last 4 years. Interesting.

But it is. Two meatballs were talking about Reds/Cubs ... nobody said anything to do with the White Sox. BigFan is a meatball for his Sox bashing ... that doesn't negate "return fire" from being meatbally ... if anything it only exacerbates the meatbally level.

Relax pumpkin ... you're a good egg, I just get bummed when you too easily take bait, bait that sometimes isn't even there, making it way too easy for the other wisenheimers to give you the business.

(that said, your point is temporarily accurate - it is just one season for a fella that is otherwise comfortably in the 'unproven' file folder)

Mac/Spiegs at 10:45 AM today. First quote from Dusty on the racist mail.

Truth is he probably did get some. That is unfortunate.

Would you think its fair to say that Steve in Elmhurst has the sack of a racist male?

I remember there being a little controversy with some of Marge Schott's comments back in the day, but can you imagine if she was an owner in today's ultra PC world? People would burn that stadium to the ground.

It wasn't all about one conversation, of course. Baker quite likely started to sense that maybe his time was up in Cincinnati. Maybe that's why he said what he said.

"The last couple weeks, I've been getting a rash of hate mail, racial mail,'' he said. "Maybe it is time to go."

"This is really ugly," he said. "There are all sorts of references to Barack Obama. So now I know where they are coming from. I don't know, maybe people are mad at him, so they don't like the idea of blacks in authority."

Probably some rogue IRS agents sending the mail.
