Bulls scrap heapers:
The Chicago Bulls Friday announced the signing of six free agents to finalize their training camp roster.

The team's roster now stands at 18.

Players signed are Patrick Christopher, Mike James, Dahntay Jones, Kalin Lucas, Dexter Pittman and D.J. White. Details of the contracts were not disclosed.

Christopher, 6-foot-5 and 220 pounds, spent last season with Besiktas of the Turkish Basketball League.

James, 6-foot-2 and 188 pounds, is an 11-year NBA veteran who appeared in 45 games for the Mavericks during the 2012-13 season.

Jones, 6-foot-6 and 225 pounds, is a 10-year veteran who previously played for the Grizzlies, Kings, Nuggets, Pacers, Mavericks and Hawks.

Lucas, 6-foot-1 and 195 pounds, was with Banvit of the Turkish Basketball League last season.
Pittman, 6-foot-11 and 285 pounds, split last year with the Heat and Grizzlies.

White, 6-foot-9 and 250 pounds, played for both the Shanghai Sharks of the Chinese Basketball Association and the Boston Celtics last season.

The Bulls open training camp Friday at the Berto Center; practices start Saturday.

Gotta be honest, I still have a real bad taste in my mouth from last season when it comes to Rose. The Bulls have issues for sure: the Thibs regular season grinder, Noah and his feet, Deng and his injuries, Boozer is due to get hurt this year, Gibson regressed badly (albeit with the injury), etc.

LeBron remains the King of the Hill and I don't see the Bulls knocking him off. In fact, Indiana may be the team ready to make a real run, not the Bulls.

Hopefully Rose comes back and dominates but the only way I see them challenging to win a title this year is if everyone stays healthy, Rose gets a chip on his shoulder and dominates and Butler has a breakout year.

Rose just does not appear to be the assassin Jordan was and therefore I don't see him being The Man when it matters most - in the playoffs at crunch time.

Yea he'll dominate lesser talents, but he won't dominate when up against guys like LeBron and Durant. He needs at least 1 more superstar to help and that guy ain't on the roster and unlike Jordan, who helped mold Scottie into the HOFer he became, Rose just doesn't have those leadership skills.

What I don't appreciate was Derrick Rose letting his brother shoot off his mouth and then not owning what his brother said. The fact that Rose had no intention of returning should have been made final before the playoffs. Rose never intended to come back and he should have just said that.

I was with you until this.

You apparently weren't watching the same 2011 Playoffs as I was. Or 2009 against Boston for that matter. Rose IS an assassin. Rose IS clutch, and he was every bit of the man when it mattered in those series. He just didn't have the supporting cast, and Miami was just better. Don't use him not coming back last year as motivation for disparaging his on-court game. His actual skill is not in question. When healthy he's the third best player in the league.

Rose's skill is in question because he hasn't played for almost a year and a half. He was given a massive contract before he blew out the knee. He was a tremendous player before the injury, but he has to prove he can play again. All he's proven recently is that he doesn't know how to handle PR.

Kid Cairo is selling Rose short according to Rose are on the same page. I like it. From the beloved Sam Smith and his rose colored glasses

But Jimmy Butler, Rose’s new backcourt running mate, went to Los Angeles this summer to train with Rose and Butler insisted he saw even a better guy than he remembers.

“I think he’s one and the same,” said Butler. “He’s better knocking down shots. He’s getting to the rim, finishing strong. I’m not worried about anything. He’s the same caliber MVP, same caliber Derrick Rose, if not better.”

But the explosion, I wondered. That’s what made Rose so special, so different.

“Off both feet, either leg,” insisted Butler. “He’s back. I like it.”

So we’ll all be watching, which, of course, is what the run up to the season has been all about.

Rose didn’t get asked at his general press conference. But earlier in the day in an interview for ESPN, Rose told Mark Schwarz in answer to who was the best player in the NBA that he was. Not bragging, mind you, just as that MVP declaration came out a few years ago. But Rose shrugged, offered that familiar wry smile and said that a player given his station and responsibilities has to look at it that way. Not to insult anyone, but if he didn’t feel that way management shouldn’t want him around, he wouldn’t be the competitor he need to be.

Really, this is an amazing kid.

If Rose thought he was the best player then why didn't he come play in the playoffs? Shouldn't the best player be on the floor when it matters?

The answer to your question is in the article. He describes clearly why he didn't play. He could handle 1 defender. He couldn't handle 2. He wouldn't have been effective and or helpful. He didn't play. He is better now. The world is better now.

Nonsense. He could have played, but his brother told him not to.

He could of played last year. Play true point. Shoot jumpers. Lead with a uniform instead of a suit. It appears to me that the Bulls were pretty sure he would not play last year at all. It saved Rose but it killed Noah and Deng. They should have sat them too. Or st least keep their minutes down. Popovich did it all year. Stern didnt like it but Stern can go fuck himself.

I still say Kobe plays in last years playoffs under the same circumstances. At any age. Im still going to root for The Bulls. Jimmy Butler gives me a sports boner. I love to watch him play. But Rose will always have some negative glow on him as far as I'm concerned. Similar to Pippens 1.8 seconds incident.

Mentioning Pippen's deal is very silly here. You're comparing an entire season of Rose not playing to a guy sitting out the final two seconds of one game. And Pippen went on to redeem himself anyway, so why this is still being brought up nearly 20 years later is puzzling to me.

Easy killer. You're right mostly. But Pippen will always be remembered for it. Its a bad thing. Every fan should have been disappointed in him. I'm disappointed in Rose for sitting when his team was fighting through injuries in the playoffs. He will always (in my mind) be remembered for this no matter how well he does from here forward.

You dont agree?

Both are different scenerios. Both were bad. Both will be remembered.

I gotta ask though. How did Pippen redeem himself? I think looking back that Kukoc saved his ass. If they lose that game, that series is over and he never lives this down.

I agree that pippen has sort of redeemed himself, but I don't think rose and pippen constitute a good comparison. Pippen was insubordinate straight up, and it was compounded by it being a playoff game. Rose was just shady and weak.

Kukoc saved his ass in that one particular game, yes. However, that 1.8 seconds had no bearing on the outcome of the series. But there was one play in Game 5 in New York that certainly did.

I'd argue that Pippen redeemed himself by having a great series the rest of the way, as well as being the best defensive player in the league for three more Bulls championships. Two seconds of his career should not define him as a player. I understand that for many fans it does define his career, but I find that to be incredibly unfair.

IMO, the Pippen migraine in Game 7 1990 ECF Vs. Detroit is much worse than 1.8-gate. If he steps it up in that game, and Bulls win, they probably finish with 7 rings instead of 6.

Pippen quit on his team. He was a great team mate other than a couple of seconds in his career. But its still two seconds more than any other superstar did. It was inexcusable and pathetic. BUT what he did for the other gazillion seconds made up for it. To your point and the reason why Scottie is my 2nd favorite Bull ever is he may have left the court for a couple of seconds, but while he was on it, he played every square foot of the court on offense and defense relentlessly. The hall of fame is filled with guys that took nights off. Either sitting out with a hang nail or sleep walking through an occasional 2nd game of a back to back. Scottie played toe to toe usually with the best player on the other team or devoured a weaker opponent. He should have won the MVP in 94.

Though neither injury is serious, Tom Thibodeau isn't sure Hinrich or Noah will play in Saturday's preseason opener.

Noah shouldn't play at all even if there's only a slight chance of a minor injury or tweak. If TT plays him while knowing he's got a minor issue, after all they've been through with Noah, Deng, Rose, pointless minutes logged at the end of games, etc., then TT should be fired.

I'm sure Thibs has received his stern lecture from GarPax. If we get to April and five or six guys are concurrently nursing serious injuries like last year, he probably won't be back the following season.

I've typically refrained from criticizing Thibs for the injuries; I reasoned that most teams have injuries going into the playoffs anyway, so it would be difficult to pinpoint which injury to any player is the result of Thibs, and which injury is just the inevitable result of playing 82 basketball games. But extended minutes for players performing at anything less than optimal speed is just dumb, and he should be kicked to the curb if he's unable to see that.
