If we just want the Bears to be decent and compete against average teams, then by all means, let's re-sign Cutler and hire jimmypasta to GM the Cubs.

Plenty of non-elite QBs have won a Super Bowl.

If you were in charge, who is the Bears QB next year?

Its rare nowadays. The last few include Manning, Rodgers, Brees, Roethlisberger, Eli, and Flacco. Eli was the beneficiary of great defensive performances, which Cutler won't get in the foreseeable future, especially if he gets an albatross contract. Rebuild city.

You are also living on borrowed time with Tillman and Briggs. Jennings is going to command some serious money if you want to keep him. Marshall is up after next year. Alshon could potentially hold out for an extension after this or next year since he may very well outplay his rookie deal this year. Doug and OB want to pay some coke machines as well.

Address all of that or pay Cutler franchise qb money? I do not think they can do both.

Bucky Chris,
If you are the GM of the Bears and Jay Cutler walks into your office and says "Pay me $18 million or I'm walking" do you do it?

If Marshall's going to be around, you probably want to keep Cutler one more season. Franchise tag Cutler. If it was good enough for Drew Brees...
Still bring in Cutler's successor--Cousins or whomever, and the successor spends a season learning the offense before stepping in to take over for Cutler the following year.

Tho given his injury history and the demand for QB's, Cutler might be tempted to sit out a season if he's franchise tagged.

I would happily franchise him at $15mm

Yep. Then Marshall, Forte, and a slew of dead money.

The average per year salary of the top 5 qb's this year is over 20 mil if what I am looking at is correct. 22, 20, 20, 20, 19.

Why? Are you saying they should draft a QB for the future then?

The only reason to franchise Cutler is if he is a one year placeholder for a rookie.

Yes. They restricted his deal this year. 18 cap hit, then 20.

Rick, yes, I would draft a QB so I had an option for 2015.

I read somewhere that he was and then I just found this which seems to back it up.

I'm confused. Now you seem to be saying it is time to move on from Cutler. You just want to wait a year. The QB they draft is not a guarantee of anything.

I still think that is outdated thinking. QB's pretty much get drafted and start right from the beginning now.

I think you should stick with Cutler until you have an alternative that will be almost as good, or better.

Biggest mistake that Emery made this year was not allowing Trestman to look at the available college QB's and saying pick one and we'll draft him. The problem is that they are going to have quite a few roster spots to replace coming up.

I think the Bears may be headed to screwed city.

It's unlikely Trestman seen them play. He said he hadn't seen Freeman in 5 years.

In theory that is nice, but it isn't how the NFL works any more. At best, you'd be looking at a Kapernick type situation but they weren't paying Alex Smith $15 million while waiting for Kaepernick.

Seems like Angelo drafted a QB every year. I was surprised that Emery didn't draft a QB last year. I thought that he might take a flyer on Matt Barkley, who fell to the 4th round & was drafted by the Eagles.

Yup. But this is Peppers last year with the Bears. He's washed up & there is no way the Bears keep him.
Carolina dumped him at just the right time, & Jerry & Lovie signed him in desperation to keep their jobs. I still cant believe the McClaskeys approved signing Peppers.

Is it me or was Matt Barkley in college for like six years? Also, how did he fall to the fourth round if I watch no college football and still know who he is?

I don't think Cutler played his best game yesterday by any means, but its kind of tough for the offense to do anything when the defense can't get the Saints off the field. Saint TOP in the 3rd quarter alone was 11 minutes. The Forte's fumble and the Oline play in the first half was inexcusable. Cutler's fumble was a direct result of poor Oline play.

The Bears D allowing long sustained scoring drives has been the downfall of the Bears so far this season. Its happened more than once in every game to this point. Even if the Bears rattle of 7 or 8 wins in a row and win the division, the defensive play won't last in the playoffs, especially when the QB is giving the ball away.

I'll be happy if the Bears are 5-2 at the bye week.

I'm in a better state of mind today, but I still stand by my thoughts on Cutler.

The stats from yesterday are irrelevant to me. The same situations always happen - offense looks "serviceable" for a few games against suspect defenses. Then they play a good defense, and it looks like a Chinese fire drill from the very beginning. Cutler has to be at least partially responsible for the lack of protection on a lot of these plays. Is he reading the defense?

Good QB's take advantage of blitzes at least occasionally. The Bears never seem to. I'm torn on what to do next year, as there are really no good options. I'm still hoping the Bears can make the playoffs, but my expectations are definitely tempered.

for me the two plays that changed the game were that pierre thomas TD right b4 the half and the huge earl bennett drop on a promising late drive. even tho the defense was str8up marinated b4 it was grilled, they still somehow held the saints to only 26pts (look at that denver/dallas game to see how quickly things can escalate against you even when you're playing heroically til that last romo int)

you know, actually it wasn't the pierre thomas TD that killed the bears.... it was that 4th-n-1/4th-n-2 conversion near midfield that allowed the saints to keep driving with under 2min left in the half (before getting the ball back in the 2nd half) going into the half down 13-7 or even 16-7 is different than 20-7.... and if earl makes that damn catch and the bears force the issue with the TD/2PT earlier on and they have one more chance to take it downfield, shit, you never know.

i'm holding out hope that jay gets better as the season goes along. for those who are quick to point out all of the OCs he's had here since 2009 (4 in 5 years?) keep in mind that basically every year jay has to learn a whole new playbook, a whole new philosophy, a whole new on-field team to communicate with.... i mean obviously there's always going to be movement in the NFL but still i'd be interested to see how many OC changes the top quarterbacks have had since 2009 and compare jay to that.

i'm not saying that jay's blameless, but still, shit, in this last game he didn't throw a dumbass interception at a horrible time.... and he seems to be getting alshon jeffery up to speed with brandon marshall, as the last 2 weeks he's stepped up to become a huge part of the offense. i'm not willing to throw the baby out with the bathwater after 5 games this season.... cuz i still think jay's gonna have a crack at ~4000yds with ~25-30/+ touchdowns when it's all said and done, cuz i do expect this offensive unit to get marginally better as each week goes on.

the defense is where they really have to make some leaps and bounds. as it's been said on the board, if they don't get turnovers they're just turnstiles.

edit: jay's on pace for ~4000yds and ~30TD right now (5 games with 1368 yds of 10/6 TD/INT football)

I am surprised & disappointed in the Defense. Since the offense is in pretty good shape with skill players, I hope Emery focuses his draft efforts on the Defense. Guys are getting old & bad fast & it must be addressed. Having said that, overall Trestman is off to a good start & I am happy with where the Bears are just 5 games into a new regime.
