I'll keep it short. We toured Auschwitz today. The tour guide is giving a few brief instructions before we set out. One of his last comments was to please not pose for pictures with the concentration camp in the background. Seems like a completely normal and respectful request. Nah, two people are posing for pics within a few minutes of the tour starting. Nothing says vacation like posing on the railroad tracks that lead to death of 1.3 million people! Secondly, prior to entering a gas chamber (an extremely sobering experience), the guide asks for silence while walking through it, out of respect for those who perished there. It took all of 30 seconds to pass through the gas chamber. Not even halfway in, a woman is asking the guide how long people would live once the gas was dropped in. Luckily the guide handled it well (i.e. didn't punch her in the face like I wanted to). In short, people suck wherever you go. Savages! The lot of 'em!

I went to Dachau earlier this summer. They don't have guides there, you just walk where you please. People were posing for pictures IN THE GAS CHAMBER. Just horrible. Not only that, but the area around Dachau was developed and people had back yards that looked out on the camp. Made me sick.

I got the distinct feeling while in Germany that they really do not feel bad about that stuff at all. But they will do and say what the world wants just to be left alone.

We don't need to go back to WWII to find people who want to wipe Jews off the earth or those who want to apologize for them. Hell, we twice elected a president who sometimes sounds like their defense attorney.

Those disrespectful pricks.

Now get the war paint and head dress so we can properly recognize a group that experienced genocide

 Eat it, DT. I thought about editing that sentence, but figured I would leave a low hanging dangle out there for someone. That's for snatching it.

I hope you aren't referencing me with that comment, JORR. I'm of the opinion to change it or just STFU about it forever. It's been going on for years and years. It's just picking up steam nationally over recent months. Maybe Snyder could offer to smoke 'em peace pipe.

I toured Buchenwald a couple years back. Was a very moving experience. We did not have a guided tour but everyone did their own with the headphones. I saw some folks taking a few pics through out the camp but did not see anything that was disrespectful. Hard to take everything in at a place like that.

Ha, yep. 10-day European vacation. 11 of those days will be spent at concentration camps.

I was recently at the Air Force museum in Dayton. I'd recommend it to anyone. When I was there they had a temporary Holocaust exhibit that featured a violin belonging to a guy named Bob Kahn who was fifteen years old on Kristallnacht. He came home from school to find Nazis beating his father and destroying his family's home as the townspeople jeered the Jews. When Kahn stepped up to ask why, the Nazis forced him to stand on the balcony and play happy German songs while they finished busting up the house. He had written a letter about it that was with the exhibit. If that doesn't make yoy cry, you're not human.

Is it just concentration, or does it help develop memory retention too?

Was there in 1985. They were building all around it at the time. It seemed odd, but you have to live somewhere I guess. That gas chamber was never used iirc. They did have the ovens in the very back that were quite creepy. The whole thing was creepy. But it was a well constructed, informational museum that painted an honest picture of what happened.

I never felt the German's I met as not caring about what happened. I did get the feeling they were tired of hearing about it. That's a hard legacy to live with, especially if you no longer have a direct association to what happened. People over 70, probably have significantly different thoughts than the rest. It wouldn't surprise me if any of there thoughts were entirely pleasant. All of the 40's probably sucked rocks for the majority of them.

I tend to disagree. A lot of it depends on where you are going, what you are doing and your general expense account I guess. My experiences have been US tourists are by far the most annoying, demanding and least interested in experiencing surroundings as they exist as opposed to expectations these things transform to what murica would do. It is annoying.

If you find the Japanese affinity for multiple picture taking as annoying, I can see that. But they aren't actively being douches in the process, other than being somewhat clueless of their surroundings.

Not just the multiple picture taking that is annoying but the fact that they have no respect for anyones personal space. That makes them way more annoying than US tourists IMO.

But being clueless of the surroundings is the entire issue with all foreigners. I hate the stereotype of the "ugly American". I've seen plenty of ugly Europeans and ugly Middle Easterners.

Japanese are 1000X worse. I'd rather hear some idiot American talking about tweeting in a gas chamber than standing in line and having the Japanese family stand right on top of you while taking 800 pictures of everything. If your fucking camera hits me one more time I'll make Hiroshima look like a fucking ride on space mountain you fucking asshole!!!

It fits though. We can find fault in all of them. I have seen negatives in Europeans and Middle Easterners as well but not nearly as much. Same with Indian/Pakistani and the differing bathing situation. But is that my bias? These people have to do things my way?

  I worked there. Not by a long shot. The biggest pains in the ass were US citizens, without question. Foreigners didn't always understand how things are done here. That is to be expected. But the majority were quite pleasant and happy to be there. Not so with the American folk. Demanding assholish bastages. I am sure you and yours were great. Trust me, more were not of the Coztansa ilk and were far more likely to be a pain in the ass compared to foreigners.
