The most egregious thing Daley did was create the two-tired public school system with one branch for the children of the wealthy and well-connected and the other branch for the children of the poor and uneducated. Throw them a bone with their own LSC.

And it's far from "natural" as you suggest. It's being driving by tax breaks and/or TIF money. You wanted examples of corporate welfare. There it is.
What do you think Chicago would look like without any of that? Shouldn't any city be looking at ways to improve themselves? Many Chicago neighborhoods have become much more modern.

I don't think anyone has an inherent right to live anywhere. If one day I can't afford where I live I'll have to move. It's the natural flow of real estate. At one time, there was probably a farm house where I live. Eventually, they moved and/or sold and a better use of the land was created. One day, what I live in will be considered a poor use of the land and something will replace it. When you deal with a city like Chicago with a major scarcity of land it will happen much faster. Imagine if in 1900 that Chicago decided that the right to live there was more important than modernizing and improving the city. What would it look like now?

The reason Chicago hasn't turned into Detroit is the residency requirement of city workers. Daley ruined the city economically.

I'm not sure this was the most egregious. But it is definitely the most obvious example of his utter disdain for all that were not his friends.

Less McMansions and slapped up three-flats that will be falling down in twenty years.

I think we're just disagreeing on what constitutes "improvement".

You keep calling it "natural". It's not natural when a municipal government arbitrarily awards fund to favored developers to facilitate the removal of an entire economic class from a neighborhood. You may feel more comfortable when you drive in from Schaumburg or Naperville, but that doesn't address the inherent immorality of such a scheme. And it is a scheme, make no mistake.

The reason I find that little trick the most offensive of his many schemes, is that everything begins with education. You don't find many New Trier or St. Ignatius grads shaking a cup on Michigan Avenue. This system is guaranteed to continue the cycle of keeping the poor poor and making the rich richer. Of course, I might be wrong. Maybe it's just the natural way of things.

Of course it is natural. It may have been sped up but this is what happens to big cities. Land becomes more scarce and eventually what once existed there goes away and something that is a more efficient use of land goes up. Neighborhoods change over generations. The neighborhood my grandparents lived in my whole life looks completely different now. 80% of the houses were torn down and rebuilt. New houses were built on land that was empty.

You just hear this in modern cities all over the place. Poor people can't even live in Manhattan any more!

It seems like you aren't really talking about gentrification. Can you explain a little more on what you mean? I was under the impression the major issue is that in many areas they built expensive condos which then lead to more expensive condos and eventually people couldn't afford to live there or were forced to move as the apartment they lived in ceased to exist.

I was saying that wasn't the ONLY issue. Many people a lot older than me remember when the south side of Chicago wasn't predominately black in some areas. Then came the housing projects. With them came crime. That forced a lot of middle class people of all backgrounds out of these communities. They moved into the improved areas that didn't have projects and had lower crime. The plight of the have nots is easier to ignore when you force segregation on communities that were once diverse.

They're doing it all over again too. They decided that the land some of these projects were built on is valuable and now they're forcing the issues of the projects on stable middle class to lower middle class communities throughout the city and suburbs.

Honest question. Is the scheme that the gentrification was going to take place at all? Or just that his buddies get the sweetheart deal? The reason I ask is before I left the are in '05 people were already doing this in the close in burbs. People tired of the commute and real estate bubbling still people/investors were tearing down homes in Oak Lawn for example and building huge houses. So my point is I think would likely happen in South Loop etc. eventually but the real problem is Daley and his cronies taking advantage?

I have my doubts you would find it natural if a mayor used your own tax dollars to provide incentive for a developer to move you off the property that has been in your family for 80 years. And you better not dig in your heels too much or you might find yourself in an eminent doman case.

I don't have any issue with a developer risking his ass by buying a property in a cheap neighborhood, knocking down an old place, building a quality new building, and trying to sell younger, upwardly mobile people on living there. That would be natural.

So now you are a big fan of generations passing on wealth and the government protecting those assets? Seems to be different than your other stances.

Once again, I don't think just because I was born to someone who lived on land 80 years ago that I have some right to it. I have a right to receive a fair price for selling it though.

I believe bigfan can speak on this topic with authority.

It's not just developers getting giant TIF money. It's often smaller stuff. For example, I had a project I was working on and the city was demanding so many parking spaces. It made the thing impossible for me. But I guarantee you there are guys who are heavier than I am, who regularly get that parking space allotment waived. Hell, maybe bigfan is one of them.

Living in Hooterville, I enjoy threads like this.

I know Chicago politics is slimy but these threads really highlight it. Love the stories from you guys who live or have lived through it. I know these stories usually highlight people getting screwed over but they are an interesting read.

I'm a practical guy, Rick, not a revolutionary. You might be confusing me with Tall Midget. On a theoretical level, I don't believe in property rights at all.

No need for the past tense with Andy Shaw.

Not true.

Daley had a conscience at some point in his life. He either chose to ignore it, or killed it by being inattentive to it.

The worst part of this is that it was totally unnecessary. He didn't need to ruin the guys life like he did.

Joravsky at the Reader used to go after the TIF cronies pretty hard. I haven't seen a Reader in a while as they changed their format a while back, but there appears to be an archive of them here:

We all have one at birth.

There is a good story, perhaps Nas can find it, regarding Daley and Kass.

Kass used to be a boot licker like everyone else. That all changed the day that Daley fired McTigue.

I had a relative that spent almost nine years in prison for the old man.

Fucked up stuff that has affected our family for a couple of generations.

He got out and was given a job as a lobbyist until he passed away.
