Ive been excited for a while about the internet eliminating Cable's stranglehold on tv, but I realized recently that the cost will just be transferred to your WiFi service little by little til they are just like cable bills.

No idea what you are talking about in regards to wifi, but the change will hopefully be towards Internet base services that offer ala cart. I think the ultimate goal (Intel is already working on it) is to have channels basically in an App Store.

Right, a la cart is great and the goal, but its completely dependant on your wifi service. As the importance of wifi goes up, the cost will too.

Im just saying if I save 50$ by not having cable and the wifi costs keep rising, eventually itll be a wash.

I think you're wrong in general, but you might be right. Cable companies hold the power today. It will come down to how Apple, Google, Intel etc can wrestle the power away. I think they have a good chance.

that is great news, Bucky. Now I really can fully cut the cable. Everything I need is at my beck. Just signed up for NBA League Pass Broadband yesterday. Going to watch it thru my apple tv.

You meant your Internet service provider. That's not related to your Wifi at all.


My guess is your internet service provider will not be the one delivering the TV content, that will be Apple/Google/Intel, etc. So I guess in theory your internet costs could go up because the provider is losing money on TV, but eventually Internet only service providers would then offer lower costs (Google Fiber, others).

I see my vision of paying a small fee for the four channels I watch disappearing. Someone will always be charging somewhere along the line.

A la carte will end up costing more money unless you don't watch much television at all.

What if I watch a fuckload of 4 channels?

Those channels will likely be very expensive especially if they are sports. You are better off letting someone who only watches one or two less popular channels chip in for your popular stations.

If you spend your life watching Current TV and BBC America you may save money.

Just look at how movie content is delivered. Going to movies is very expensive. Renting them on demand is expensive. Watching them on a movie channel is much cheaper.

Eventually, people will drop cable service and just get internet from them. Those prices will raise and then we'll be paying Netflix, Hulu, and HBO $20 a month instead.

I guess it depends on how you use your cable...I get my NBA through League Pass, my MLB through the Ticket, my broadcast channels through an antenna (and yes other than CBS and occasionally NBC I get all the chicago stations out here) I get my premiership through NBC Sports Live Extra and now I may be getting free Bulls games. That's enough TV for me.

You still aren't describing a replacement for cable. In fact, one of those things requires cable service. You are still paying $30 a month for sports too and you are missing two sports.

It's a replacement for cable if you are willing to basically not have most of what cable provides.

So you think that HBO, TBS, AMC and ESPN will cost as much as cable?

Yes, if not more.

Right now, there is someone who pays for ESPN but only watches E! and Lifetime that is helping pay for your channels or only uses cable to watch network television.

It doesnt change the fact that Im paying for 600 channels and using 8. No other business would run that way.

It's not ridiculous. They have to adjust to having 1/4th of the paying customers. Here is a good example. The Big Ten Digital Network costs $14.95 a month. I have a sports pack I purchased from my cable company that is about $6 a month. Big Ten fans in Illinois are paying less than $3 a month as Curious Hair helps to subsidize it even though he doesn't watch. The costs are spread out among everyone. You and me likely watch more expensive things than my grandparents but we both pay for the same basic channels. ESPN probably would cost more than HBO. TBS/TNT is going to command some pretty high rates too. If you don't watch Comedy Central or FX/FXX you may be able to avoid that.

Also, with that "savings" you basically have a very limited selection.
Plenty of businesses do. Most things you pay a monthly fee do. Gyms do. Netflix does unless you watch all genres of movies. Newspapers do. The best way to provide unique content is to bundle it with other unique content. Some will read both. Others will read one or the other.

What two sports? Hockey? I also bought (for about $40 after trading in Madden 13) Directv Sunday Ticket Broadband. Sure some of these things require a cable subscription. Just not mine. I'm not paying $30 a month either. I split my MLB package among four to five friends and I have another friend that allows me to use his unused NBA League Pass broadband subscription since he only watches the games on TV.

I was the fat cat for a few years...had two slingboxes going for friends of mine, bought both sports packages outright because I'm a huge A's and Rockets fan. Now it's my turn to leech.

so apparently this whole to-do about Slingbox parterning up with Apple TV is all dependent upon having an Ios device. So I'm out of luck. I'll go back to streaming to my computer and Air Parroting it to my Apple Tv.

Yea, I tried to explain that earlier. It's basically just mirroring from the device.


I'm still holding out hope that Apple really opens up the ATV to developers soon. It's been a good sign with Espn, HBO, disney apps recently, but hopefully they go the whole way. I think if they do open it up, safe to assume Sling would develop an ATV app.
