I was on the treadmill tonight so I could nto get all the info, but some ESPN Basbeall guru was saying that he though the Sox would do slightly better than the 72-90 predicted record.

Anyone know who predicted the 72-90?

While the analyst did not agree with the 72-90 he talked about this team having a down year because the need some older players to continue to perform and they need rookies to step up.

I had to read the scroll for what he was saying but he focused on Garland , talked about Garland's ERA 1 full point higher last year and opp. BA .307 against him.

But 72-90? Been looking on ESPN website for the guy who claimed the 72-90 and cant find him or her

also had the sox pegged for 73 wins before 2005.

If they played in the NLC it would be 90-72. With all the question marks at CF/LF and loss of Garcia, lack of a proven number 5 starter, tuff division, I can see how they came up with 72-90.

I guess there must be a another Jon Garland who pitches for the Sox because the one I am thinking of has led the MLB in wins over the last two years.

Dye, Thome, Konerko, Pierzinski and Crede. If the Sox starters merely return to their career averages the Sox are no less than a 92 win team.

So apparently the loss of Freddy Garcia from the starting rotation means the sox will win 18 less games this year. Garcia is the only major loss from last years team and Garcia only won 17 games last year. So maybe that one extra game is the loss of McCarthy from the bullpen.

86-76. Assuming they've got luck on their side. I am banking on the tough division (Fuk YOU KC) and the AL attitude that they Sox are still a "team to beat".

i totally agree with not picking them to win the division or wild card, but barring 3 or 4 major injuries, they're gonna win a lot more than 72 games.

Steve Philips said Ozzie was on the hot seat. Moron. Jerry loves him and he's the freshest personality in professional sports in a hell of a long time. F YOU Steve Philips.

Makes me think of Jeff Brantley during an episode of Baseball Tonight aired during spring training of the Sox championship year. The topic: which of the Chicago teams would make the playoffs. Jeff Brantley looks straight into the camera, laughs, and says, "I'm sorry, guys, but none of these teams are going to the playoffs."

While we are merely in Spring Training at this point, from the looks of our pitchers and a few of our hitters... I'm going with a record of 88-74.

The Sox will win more than 72 games this season, without a doubt.
If the bullpen can perform adequately and they can find a decent fifth starter, they will contend with 86-91 wins. I don't see run production being a problem, but the pitching staff needs to perform better than last year, IMO.
If someone really emerges in the fifth slot and the bullpen overachieves they will make the postseason.

Ozzie is on the hot seat as much as Lovie Smith is, meaning he ain't going anywhere for a while. Ownership loves him, the players love him, the fans love him; oh and by the way Steve Philips HE MANAGED A WORLD SERIES AND FOLLOWED UP WITH A 90 WIN SEASON YOU MORON!!!!

You know, I wish I could get a job in sports journalism. Problem is, I'd have to become dumber.

I too agree with the 84-86 but what pisses me off is that this still was a 90+ win team! Then maybe make a trade and go for it.

I think this SUX! I always backed Kenny because he went for it. He would even go for it with lessor talent! Now they have a 90 win team and he made them worse for this year to get better in the future.

If this team is in the 70 win area it will suck and Kenny needs to answer

I remember a few more after Ozzie left the Sox as a player Frank.

Ozzie was hardly the beloved teammate the Sox have retrofitted him to be. I think he was generally considered an annoying little shit with a big affinity for beer.

Sox will win 85-90 games

ESPN also picked the Indians to win the Central with the Twins in the Wild Card (I believe Sutcliffe and the other guy in Spring Trainning)

Let's be honest guys, if it isn't the AL East, they really don't give a shit

If they are lucky, they will win 72. Bad, bad team.

I don't know if they are playing with intensity each game (Kenny Williams certainly doesn't think so after his meeting last Thursday with the team) or if the team simply sucks on West Coast trips OR if it's a combination of both....I'll go with a below average team not playing with consistent intensity who happens to play very badly on West Coast trips.

In my opinion....poorly managed and a gm who thought he could do anything he wanted with this team and make it work, now he has a giant mess. For the record, he is going to regret signing dye to the 2 year extension.

Just wanted someone else to resurect this thread.

MY GUY NWO!

hey play .500 ball and you get to that magical 72 win mark!

As all teams have bad seasons, that isn't the reason for my ridicule, this is

'This is basically the same team that won a world series for ME, just 2 years ago. " KW

And thats exactly my point!

It's not the same team. KW is wrong. The bullpen is all different except for Jenks. (Yes, Kenny fucked up on the bullpen this year.) Contreras is two years older.

The offense should have been better then the 05 team but they weren't. I blame the players for that. Our starting pitchers pitched well enough for us to be in this race. Now they are doing poorly but the season was over when they started to pitch bad.

Why the hell are certain Cub fans on this board spending more time discussing the '07 and '05 Sox than their own team who just took over first place finally, has just won 2 in a row against the rival Cardinals, and re-signed their best pitcher in 15 years to a new contract. The Sox are terrible and have very few story lines right now, especially for a Cub fan. Now you poke around talking about the Sox all the time. Why don't you post about your Cubs and the good things they're doing?

i dont know the answers to those questions hawk, but for them to even be asked right now is why the nominations in 'douchebage of the week' are so very very appropriate right now.

I doubt it, Dye has been heating up after the break and 2 yrs 22 mill isnt really too much of a risk. I see it as a solid deal, not a make or break for the team but not really anything to regret, even if Dye doesnt perform well it is still only 2 years.

I am the biggest Sox fan around and I hate the Cubs. That being said, there is no way the Sox win 90 in any division. Maybe in the Fronteir League. They are ass awful. They are the worst team the Sox have had since the opening of the new park. This team is about as bad as the team that the GM played centerfield for.
