They have been to the playoffs under the new core for two consecutive years, and will most likely make that three years in a row once the season ends. 2006 was a stepping stone year for the Saints, and I do recall much public support for their chances, but they were still a piece or two away if I remember correctly.
They obviously were, but there wasn't a soul outside a 90-mile radius of Soldier Field who thought the Bears would win that game.

I don't know if we remember the Bengals the same way in the mid-2000s; in 2005 for instance they went 11-5 with a stud QB and WR, both of whom were very young, and I seem to remember the arrow pointing up after the lost to the eventual champion Steelers in the first round.
I remember someone fucked up Carson Palmer's knee in that game and the thought was "so much for that." Though then again that may have just been what the Grobber said.
Is that when he got injured? Wow, didn't know it was in the playoffs. That guy was on pace to become an elite QB, if I remember correctly. Perhaps explains why they didn't take off after 11-5 in 2005.
As for the Bears, I am pretty sure they were strong candidates for the Superbowl that season. They did start 5-0 that season after promising 2005 season that ended up in a surprising playoff birth. They had a young, highly rated defense, a good running game behind a good line, and what was thought to be a serviceable QB that could throw a good deep ball when needed. It could be my homerism, though.
