The Bears on Saturday bolstered an injury-depleted position by agreeing to terms on a one-year contract with four-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Jay Ratliff

We are getting a monopoly on underperforming and often injured Jay's.

He should be ready in 2-3 weeks.

He should be ready right now. He was never even hurt this year. Jerry is going to have his lawsuit ready in 2-3 weeks.

I know he has had issues, but even if he can't help the Bears now,it's a nice piece to have for next season if the Bears resign him.

Agree, just focus on getting the offense to a high level. Get Wilson more involved, develop a FB.

The defense is a mess and unless i see Peppers took some 'shots' over the break, there is Zero reason to think it will be better and Rodgers will make it look like a college team!

I see little reason to get excited about Ratliff for next season. The Bears needs younger pieces, and Ratliff will be 33 next season with a semi-major injury under his belt. At this age, he's the sort of guy you bring in to bolster a starting lineup. If he's your second or third best DT next season, then your team sucks.

Ratliff hasn't played in a year which means he's basically even with McClellin.

If the Bears want to hurry somebody back from injury,it should be this guy. If he can even approach what he once was,he can change that whole defense around. A hurried QB makes the job easier for the defensive backfield.

So Ratliff is apparently ready to go this week. He's obviously not going to rectify every single problem the defense has, but any help would be very welcome. I'm not sure what his strengths are at this point, but I'm going to be watching if the run defense improves, even if it's only a marginal improvement. Between little to no QB pressure, and giving up 10 YPC, I would think the latter is easier to improve, and his inclusion in that effort is welcome since it seems the Bears have been just fine on offense.

There were several teams interested in him so I imagine he is still starter level talent. That is far above the 3rd string talent the Bears are currently playing at DT. I don't say that derisively. The starters were literally on 3rd stringers at the start of the season if they were in the league at all.

That is true, they're playing third stringers in a lot of places. The only thing I'd say in response here is that, while he was more or less highly suited, I am more worried about him coming back from an injury and long layoff.

Even though I think the defense will prevent the Bears from doing damage in the postseason, I still would like to see them qualify, and adding Briggs and Ratliff can only help.
