Steve, have you ever bullied anyone?

Absolutely no hazing of any physical kind. Practical jokes with teammates in College. Just pranks though and everyone got involved and everyone was a victim of the pranks now and then. Nobody was ever physically harmed at all though. My favorite was baby powder blown under the door into a teammates room. It looked like it had snowed in the room.

You just described hazing, you fuckin' moron.

Checking tire tread with a penny is a not so subtle form of bullying.

I never understood the pay it forward mentality of hazing/bullying. As someone on the receiving end of professional bullying, I decided to not do the same thing to the newer employees. Instead, now that I'm in a position to do so, I am doing everything I can to bury the bullies/make their lives a living hell.

Maybe that's what Martin decided. After all, do you think Incognito has been having a pleasant couple of days? He's in the tail end of his career, if he gets another job ever again, I'll be surprised.

But hazing does not have the same storied traditions in regular workplaces as it does in lockerrooms. I'm not judging it as right or wrong, but if I had to buy dinner for a bunch of fatass linemen as a rookie, I damn sure want my dinner paid for when I'm a veteran.

Speaking of pennies and pranks, did anyone else's college dorms have rooms where you could "penny" the door? At U of I, you used to be able to use a penny on the outside of the door such that the people were locked inside. You'd just put the penny in between the door and the gap in the metal frame.

That's the interesting part, what's the difference between hazing, bullying, and tradition? I agree with you about the dinner thing, that seems more of a tradition. However having someone call you up and extort 15k out of you for a trip...that's a different. Granted it's hard to so where the line is crossed.

You just described hazing, you fuckin' moron.

They had some interview with a current NFL player, forget who it was, says "we don't haze people" and for the rest of the interview explains what they do instead which was the definition of hazing.

We used to penny people into their dorm rooms all the time. That never got old.

You are the moron. What took place was guys on the Baseball team pulling pranks on each other. Big difference. It made no difference if anyone was big/small an upper classman or a freshman. Whether the pranks involved taking the speaking piece out of their phone, baby powder under the door, or a dozen other things.....nobody was ever harmed and there were no hurt feelings. You just thought of what you might do next to prank them back. Just fun stuff.

1. Somebody tells me to give them 15k, I'm just gonna say "fuck you".

2. He should have called the police after this jack ass called him the "N word" and threatened to kill him. Then it's OVER. Cuz the Dolphins would have cut him at that point.

Don't tell me about backlash from teammates. Fuck it. This cracker threatened to kill him. Bet you all the guys on the team would have have loved to have seen him arrested unless they're racist like Incognito.

Nope. Just a large container of baby powder, an extension cord and a hair dryer. It's amazing how far that stuff travels and it's so fine that it's very difficult to clean up. Oh, and we all still stay in touch (went to Homecoming last month with 8 of us attending) and we all stood up for each others weddings, are Godfathers to each others kids. The stuff we did was all in fun and nothing a bit like what Incognito has done.

When I was one of the larger, older guys on the team, the shit wasn't funny if others tried to pull it. And I wouldn't allow it.

Why not? Did I lose my sense of humor when I grew up? Wha happened?

Among other things, I remembered that when I was one of the smallest, least secure guys on the team, it hurt. And to fit in, you had to take it. And that "fun stuff" hurt the little guy just trying to fit in. And at one point that was most of us, you bigoted asshole.

Fuck you, coward.

That's a very grown-up attitude and sadly, one not often found within the juvenile culture of sports.

The problem is that most people who play "jokes" are too dense to pick up on signs that others don't enjoy it as much as they do or are too pathetic of a person to really care as long as it made them fit in. I'd be shocked if everyone who played with Elmhurst Steve thinks he was a great teammate.

If Regular Reader was one of those wimpy guys that got picked on by mean spirited teammates and it left him scarred by the experience. That's unfortunate. But nothing we did ever harmed anyone. Everyone got pranked and pranked others. No need to project onto others what they had nothing to do with.

I think there is a difference between fraternity/sorority hazing and a few pranks. I've never been one to mess with someone because they may appear to be weak so that has never been an issue for me. I am and probably always will be a prankster. I have a good laugh when it's done to me and I even do it to my kids. When I played sports I was apart of and on the receiving end of a few of these. There is a line you don't cross and you have a good idea who wouldn't have an issue with it. I don't think being a prankster makes anyone an asshole or a coward.

I can't speak for everyone I played with on those teams, that's ridiculous. But I have maintained close friendships with the majority of them, stood up for several of their weddings, been a Godfather to a couple teammates children and had almost all of them to my home during the years after school when I hosted a yearly party for the team. They called me to join in a get together last month, where we went back for Homecoming as well, so I guess I was pretty well liked. Was I liked by every single other player on the team, all 4 years? I have no idea. Anthony Hopkins said "The opinion others have of me is none of my business." Makes sense to me.

That's the point though. I'm sure there were people you didn't get along with as well as you think. That is why your "pranks" may not have been as harmless as you think.
