The Cubs informed WGN on Tuesday that they were opting out of their contact with WGN to broadcast Cubs games following the 2014 season. WGN has 30 days to agree to a higher rate to broadcast the approximately 70 game package they air. After 30 days, if no agreement has been reached, the team can negotiate with other media outlets or might opt to create their own network from which to broadcast. This will certainly result in a hefty influx of additional revenue to the team.

It certainly had the potential to be the most lucrative way to go. WGN still may agree to the higher rates just to retain the Cub broadcasts before the 30 days are up. I doubt they can afford it though.

The product we are talking about is the 2015 model and beyond. By that time things might be greatly improving.

Generally while negotiating a deal you want to strike while the iron is hot and this is the coldest the Cubs have been in awhile.

It's just like the Big Ten Network though. 10-20% of your customer base will freak out if they don't have it on day one. When the BTN came out, cable companies got calls non stop asking why they didn't have it.

Old people love cable too. They don't want to twitter a roku to watch the Cubs.

The Royals and Astros tried to start RSNs and failed, and I'd say the Cubs look a lot more like the Royals and Astros than the Yankees and Red Sox these days.

Except the Cubs play in a major market and the Royals and Astros no not. That makes all the difference in the world and again, by the time 2015 rolls around they should have some of the better young players already at the major league level and the team should be significantly improved. From there, it should only continue to improve.
