It really depends on how heavy the oil the house puts down. You will be able to tell when you are hitting your mark and the ball is coming right through the head pin. That is when it's time to start adjusting your line and/or mark to find the pocket. The type of ball comes in to play as well. A ball that is shiny is not going to hook in oil where a dull ball will. A shiny ball will work better on dry lanes.

I never suggest putting the ball in the polishing machine. Those things should be destroyed.

What is your look sequence like? I mean, you said you KNOW when you are hitting your mark - are you watching the arrows through release and then following the ball. Do you ever find yourself not looking at your mark?

I do watch the arrows through the ball going over the mark. I throw 2nd arrow to start, which works well for me because I throw hard. You can tell by the way it hits the 1-3 pocket (I'm right handed). If it's too high, you are going to leave a 4 or 9 pin (hopefully not both). If it's light, you are going to really be able to tell because you are getting like a 6 or 7 count.

Can you always tell right away?

As soon as the ball snaps more than the last shot, they are breaking down, and you need to adjust.

Do you have any tips on staying behind the ball - or do I just have to wait until my wrist adjusts to handling the weight of the ball?

I have a positioner, but I still find myself occasionally rolling over the top and having the ball fall out early.

Also, is your first step with left or right?

I think I am stuck with a first step left, even though I know you're supposed to start with the right - it just doesn't feel proper to me.

Lefty or righty?

As far as staying behind the ball, it will come with practice. Best suggestion I have is to make sure you have a steady pace as you walk. More than not, doing something to throw your timing off will result in coming over the top because you're trying to compensate.

Something else I like to employ when coaching my wife is the use of video. Even taking a video using your phone, it gives you an idea of what you look like, and you can see what you may need to work on.

I have done that already, and it wsn't pretty.

I throw righty, BTW.

So, at what point are bowlers making precise adjustments to PIP, Pin to PIP, PSA, etc.? Do you?

I throw with both hands.

Can we get back to Jonathan Martin yet?

I once bowled next to Carmen Salvino at River Grove Bowl on Grand Ave. It was great, because he threw a strike and I threw a strike (just the one time  ) He had an assistant that was shining up his balls like Jesus in "The Big Lebowski".

As arighty, if you are going with a 4 step approach, you want to start on your right foot. 5 step you start with your left.

Honestly, I adjust everything from my mark to where I hit. Keep it as simple as possible. Pick a mark and work your way to a starting point. From there, you will be golden. If you throw a moderate hook, the second arrow is a great place to start. Don't have to get too fancy.

And Seacrest, screw this Martin guy, I never really cared about this story in the first place.

The strange thing about bowling is that I believe more people bowl than ever, they just don't bowl as much or in organized leagues. A lot more bowling in the dark with a craft beer in your hand these days. Just more evidence of the collapse of community in America. In fact, I think a guy wrote a book called Bowling Alone about just that.

Look at all these places that have closed:

http://bowlinghistory.wordpress.com/cat ... ng-alleys/

I rolled at my fair share of the ones on the North side. In fact, I once signed for a million dollar loan in the back of Gabby Hartnett.

One good bowling story I have happened about 20 years ago, just before 20th Century at Belmont & Cicero closed. I was definitely the weakest bowler in this crew. I'm not a guy who can throw up numbers like Chus or Boyd, but I was a solid guy to have in a money league, bowling in the two or three hole. I wasn't going to crack under pressure and I could almost always throw the first two in the tenth if we needed it. Plus I was very subtle about throwing away pins when it was called for. We had one douchebag who would just dump the ball in the gutter. That was a point of contention at breakfast after bowling on several occasions. It's a good way to get kicked out of a league. We took the money from these dopes this year, we'd like to do it again next year too.

Anyway, we had this league all sewn up. All we had to do was win two games against one of the worst teams in the last week. For them to beat us a game when we were all going balls out would have been a shocker. So we crushed them the first game. I think we were probably counting the cash already and we ended up losing the second one. The third game was close but in the tenth it looked like we had it in hand. We had five guys coming in off strikes. Well, four guys threw bad splits and I threw a great ball, got tapped on the ten, and missed the motherfucker. We lost by two or three pins. It cost us over $600 a guy. My friend Ray was really counting on the money as he was nearly homeless. When we walked out of the bowling alley, Ray unzipped his bag, took the ball out, and rolled it down Cicero Avenue.

I love my Sync. The pins just explode with that ball, and if you miss a little, you can get away with a good carry. I'm looking at getting a HyRoad Pearl for when lanes start breaking down at Poplar.

i need to chime in on this - the Sync is the best ball i have ever owned by far. that ball just explodes through the pocket. it rolls out beautifully and consistently on the transition every time and drives through like a Mack truck. very predictable reaction ball after ball. carries light hits, high hits, and obliterates solid pocket hits. i cannot endorse this ball enough. i must point out that i am a lefty, but my team does have three lefties on it, and typically there will be at least 4 lefties on my pair each week so i dont get my own personal red carpet down the left side all night. i actually bowl tonight, now i am looking forward to it!

K, just got back in from rolling 6 games. New High: 171. Worked on a 4 step approach learned off youtube.

Arm and wrist strength is getting there, but I don't trust it totally just yet. gotta learn to take a little speed off.

As you build up strength, it will definitely get there. Remember, it's a process. It's not going to be an overnight thing.

Yeah. The problem is that the more places like a Pinstripes Lounge that open, the more a Brunswick wants to compete with it. Brunswick changed the direction of their entire business plan when it came to bowling centers back in the late 90's. They created the "Brunswick Zone" concept, which not only focused on the leisurely weekend bowler, but did so at the expense of the league bowler. They renovated their bowlers' area to feature 2 separate tables, staggered on each pair of lanes, changing from a bunch of chairs facing each other. They've since changed the layout back to a traditional seating area, mostly because the tables were truly in the damn way; true story...the front table and scoring screen was so far up at the Brunswick in Palatine I used to bowl at that people that started at the back of the approach could actually lean on the damn thing before they started bowling; this house has subsequently closed. Brunswick can't compete with a Pinstripes setup. First off, the beer selection isn't nearly the same. Secondly, the attraction is that it's an experience at Pinstripes. Hell, at the place on 176, I think the bar is bigger than the bowling area.

What I'm really interested to see is this new place that Brunswick has opened in Buffalo Grove. From talking to my people at the center in Vernon Hills, it's aimed directly at the crowd that JORR is talking about; and they're going to try and do it without the leagues. All the way down to the lounge-y look inside. There was a place called Eskape in this space before Brunswick bought it, and they also opened with the intention of not having leagues. Within a year, they were bleeding so much money that they started leagues, but the management had no idea how to deal with leagues, so it failed. What you're looking at here is a 38 lane space that wants to charge $25 bucks an hour to bowl. Once the novelty wears off, coupled with the fact that it's pretty hard to find people that just want to go bowling at 7 on a Wednesday night, I'm guessing they will open themselves to leagues as well.

It's really hard to pass off the guaranteed money coming in. Couple that with guaranteed concessions and bar purchases, the leagues truly bring more money in. I think Brunswick shot themselves in the foot in regards to that, because they've turned off many bowlers.

In Buffalo Grove? It's now called Brunswick's Buffalo Grove or some shit like that. They completely renovated and reopened.

I'd call the cheese in the whole a dick move as there is probably grease and oil residue that took a while to come out. I'd be pissed about that. Harmful prank.

Lucky strike/pin stripes is perfect for us. The food is okay. I can't always figure out the pricing though. The kids like Brunswick because of the game room.

Bowling, golf, and softball all suffer from equipment bloat. Black house balls on uneven lanes, real wood woods, and shitty dented bats are the way to go. Not that I don't use the best equipment when I play them, but they're different sports than they used to be.

I would agree with that. My friend Jerry who died and I bowled together a lot. Jerry was strong. One year at Gateway he shot 700 every week in the second half (including 2 0r 3 800s) with a fucking house ball. Jerry liked to say that he could grab a rock from the alley and throw it in the pocket. Gateway was an easy shot with blocked lanes, but come on man, that's some serious stuff.

absolutely with bowling. bowling used to be all about making sure you stayed clean and made your spares and letting the strikes come. now bowling is about how many strikes in a row you can string together, and a spare is like an open. it is no longer a question of "if" there will be a 300 in your league this year (any typical semi-competetive league), it is "how many". i remember when that young guy threw the first ever sanctioned 900 series back int he late '90's. the first ever in the history of league bowling. now 15 years later there have probably been 25 or 30 of them.

just with a simple equipment change my average has jumped from 190-192 to 205. im still bowling the same amount of games at the same house with the same basic talent level. its the ball exploding the pocket at a better angle more consistently that has bought me 1-2 extra strikes a game, and 1-2 less opportunities to fuck up a spare.

absolutely with bowling. bowling used to be all about making sure you stayed clean and made your spares and letting the strikes come. now bowling is about how many strikes in a row you can string together, and a spare is like an open. it is no longer a question of "if" there will be a 300 in your league this year (any typical semi-competetive league), it is "how many". i remember when that young guy threw the first ever sanctioned 900 series back int he late '90's. the first ever in the history of league bowling. now 15 years later there have probably been 25 or 30 of them.

just with a simple equipment change my average has jumped from 190-192 to 205. im still bowling the same amount of games at the same house with the same basic talent level. its the ball exploding the pocket at a better angle more consistently that has bought me 1-2 extra strikes a game, and 1-2 less opportunities to fuck up a spare.

This reminds me of the house in Michigan that we go to when we are there. Last year from August to March there were 38 300 games and 20 800 series.

Crazy
