We had just brought home my newborn son from the hospital. Some relatives came to visit including one guy who was my age (20-something). The dude pulled out a cigarette right next to my new baby. I told him to put it out. I heard later he got pissed I told him that. Flash forward 30 years,he' dead from lung cancer. I have never smoked because it just seemed weird to me why I would want to do that to myself.

The interesting thing is that people seem to think that being in a car is a private thing when in reality it is one of the most public things we engage in. I think there is a better case to be made for banning smoking in cars than there is banning smoking in restaurants.

Why do you give a shit what I do in my car? A friend of mine worked for Nalco and they had a rule that you couldn't smoke in your car in their parking lot. I would have quit that job in a second. It's just more power for the 1%. I would compare it to blue laws. The working man was busting his ass six days a week and the wealthy who could drink anytime didn't want him to have a beer on his only day off. Most laws are nothing more than disguised attacks on the American working man.

Driving almost always takes place on public property whereas restaurants are almost always private property. While it probably isn't as bad as texting, smoking is yet another distraction for a driver. There is no avoiding a person smoking next to you at a stoplight. I can avoid a bar that allows smoking but I can't really avoid stoplights.

I love that smoking is banned in pretty much every public place though.

Good point.

Your smoke effects me too. That's ultimately the problem with smoking. It is a habit that also effects those around you. If someone wants to eat a tabacco brownie in his car then go for it.

This doesn't have to be the answer to everything. Save this kind of stuff for real injustices.

Agreed. Music should be at a volume that doesn't effect others.

At least I won't make you less healthy with Nelly.

You are affecting my central nervous system when you blare "Hot in Herre". Besides that, I don't think there is any evidence to suggest that a waft of smoke from my car is any more unhealthy than the pungent scent of your Drakkar Noir.

Smoking is terrible for the lower and middle class and they've been abused by tobacco companies for massive profit. All of a sudden it's an attack on the lower class to make it harder to smoke?

Adam Carolla is.

At least he claims there is no proof anyone died from it.

On a personal level, I don't care. I've never smoked a cigarette in my entire life. I don't see the point of smoking. It killed both my parents. But if I could communicate with my mom from the grave, I'm 100% sure she would say that she would not give back one single cigarette. I just see this as more government control of the people. Is smoking in a car with a kid bad for the kid? Sure. A lot of things are bad for kids. I wouldn't let my ten-year-old ride a mini-bike but a lot of people do. That's their fucking business.
:o :o :o
Don Cooper Whoa-Whoa-Whoa here. . .

You have a 10-year old?

No. I was just making the point that if I did he wouldn't ride a mini-bike. I don't smoke either.

If a parent is gonna smoke in a car with a little kid than banning that isn't gonna solve the problem. Just like regulating the size of a soda you can buy isn't going to affect the obesity problem.

What's worse for a kid: cage fighting or being in a car with a smoker with the window open? Why aren't we banning the three million kids who are cage fighters in this country from their hobby? It's for the children.

Now I can't wait for my dad and step mom to bitch about getting tickets for smoking with my 8 year old brother in the car.

This law is downright shortsighted.
If a parent smokes in the car with the kid, you know damn well and good they're smoking at home with the kid. And I wager they spend 20x more time in the home with the kid than the car.
This probably does almost nothing to protect a kid. Practically nada.
What it does do is create opportunity to separate someone from their money and boy does it sound like a righteous way to do it!

Want to separate more money from people? OK! LETS DO IT!
Smoking in a car in a school zone? $250!
Smoking in a car "on school days when children are present" (Always loved that one, ambiguous enough to allow a child 400 yards away to get you a ticket)

Nope. Gotta ban that too.
Smoking while within 250 yards of a home with children! BAN IT, $250! (first offense)
Smoking within 250 yards of a no smoking zone? $250!

Does the kid get a choice? Sure the parent will still smoke at home but at least they will get one more place where their parent can't do something that's harmful to their health.

We've tried banning things before and it doesn't stop anything. Your neighbor will just sell illegal cigarettes.
