Ousted by Lovie for disagreement on how the defense should coached and while Lovie had years of taking the ball away from the bottom half of the league, todays Carolina defense was better than ANY I ever saw by Lovie! Getting 4 Turnovers against bad teams is just not impressive as the Bears did for years. It pads the stats and is what Lovie defenders used for years to say it was a GREAT defense. Good QB's like Rogers picked apart the 2 Deep Safety crap that works when rookie QBs overthrow WR's and you get cheap picks!
C'mon,if it was so easy why didn't everybody do it? Lovie's defense usually played pretty well over a 9 year span. I'm not going to strip that away from his legacy.
No doubt, big picture you can't take away Lovies overall win %, but whats the point? To win the Super Bowl and yes he got there once, thanks to playing some really bad teams!
Lovies defense is designed to bat up bad teams! Playing 2 safeties 30 yards deep on every play just to make sure you dont get burned deep is fine. Make QB's drive down the field, put teams in 3rd down situations all day. Play Bad teams and you are going to win when you play those games 100 times. At the same time you will lsoe to good teams with good QBs that just pick you apart.
It is evident in the #'s! 30 above when playing sub .500 teams and 20 below when playing teams above .500. Thats a HUGE difference. We might even call it a TREND
