What a bitch. Shut up and play.

Report: Rockets certain to trade Omer Asik

Brett Pollakoff

The situation with Omer Asik in Houston has deteriorated to the point where the big man that head coach Kevin McHale tried to pair alongside Dwight Howard in the starting lineup hasn’t been emotionally ready to suit up for the team’s last two games.

After essentially requesting to be traded since the deal to acquire Howard went down in July, Asik has continued those requests on a regular basis.

Now that it’s become clear that he won’t even function in his most basic role on the floor, the latest report has the team resigned to trading him just as soon as a reasonable deal materializes.

From Marc Stein of ESPN.com:

The center was scratched from Saturday’s home game against Denver essentially because he’s so unhappy with his new role that he’s in no state to play. Word is Asik has been asking the Rockets pretty much once a week, since Dwight Howard‘s arrival in July, to please trade him elsewhere. And now losing his starting spot, on top of what was already a reduced role, has clearly knocked the 27-year-old back.

Sources with knowledge of the situation told ESPN.com that Asik was challenged by coaches and teammates this week for not being “engaged” in the wake of the lineup change, which took effect when Asik was moved to the bench for Wednesday’s game in Philadelphia. And he hasn’t played since the challenge, logging zero minutes Thursday night in New York while in uniform and not even dressing against the Nuggets.

As noted in the same report, it could be a while until a deal worth making becomes available, due to the fact that players who signed contracts in July aren’t eligible to be dealt until after December 15.

That’s a long time to wait, and while Asik can be a valuable defensive big man when engaged, this extended pouting won’t play well with GMs around the league
, and given the situation becoming so public, it certainly won’t help the Rockets get close to equal value in a trade anytime soon.

I feel for the guy. He wants to play. They signed him to a long term deal last season and he played very well, and then got Howard who took away most of his minutes. Bulls should try to buy low. Offer Boozer for Asik.

That would destroy the plans for the summer. He wouldn't start either. I like Asik but his salary doesn't make him a good fit.

It's adversity. Shut the fuck up and play when you're called upon.

i gotta agree with DB , this is a slightly different situation here
its not like his reduced role was related to poor play- i mean he pretty much had a breakout year
i don't necessarily blame the Rockets for putting their desire to get & then feature Howard , not saying they should have "chosen" asik instead, but not sure why you can't understand why he'd be frustrated.

I understand why he's frustrated. He can either contribute when he's in the lineup, or pout about the Howard acquisition until the team ships him to Charlotte.

the one thing that's !!! in all of this is that HOLY SHIT omer asik is 27?

i could swear he came to the bulls as like a ~22-23 year old and then did his time here and became a rocket when he was ~24-25.... but evidently i was a couple'a years short of the truth. i'm assuming his deal was for 3 or 4 years tops so it won't carry him too far into his 30s; where you'd have the fear of him waking up one season and finding out in soviet turkey the wall hits you, or whatever the hell kind of meme you could spout out to basically say "omer got really old really quick"

i think he's a bit more of a natural defender than good ol ben wallace, who went from a fearsome force worthy of a big deal to de-facto player/coach of the bulls in the boylan era to just about completely useless in the game of basketball in under ~2 seasons. i didnt watch omer that closely last year, but i reckon if he has no resemblance of a proper offensive game he's more liable to fall off pretty damn quickly cuz lose a step or two on defense and it's career over as opposed to "well at least he can give us 8/5 off of the bench" and methinks omer knows that, as he's a late bloomer with no offensive game so therefore he needs all of the starts/minutes/stats he CAN get in the hopes of getting one more nice posh ~3yr deal before it's on to the 1yr up-to-3mil/yr contracts for a season or maybe two b4 he's likely done around the age of 33-35.

i feel ya pain omer, but you can't bitch @ houston that much for getting paid that handsomely for being a basketball player who can't shoot/score
