The Phillies have re-signed free agent catcher Carlos Ruiz. The deal is worth 3yr/$26M with an option for the 2017 season.

Boy that's quite a commitment for a 34 year old second tier catcher. The Phillies are throwing around some money again this off season.

That's just crazy money, I think they have lost their mind.

I thought they were going to try to retool the team with some younger talent after getting a stats guy on board with the front office? Instead they get Marlon Byrd who is old as hell and has been god awful recently except for last season and now Ruiz?? They must be all in on next year and hoping that their old pitchers have 1 more great year left in them.

The San Francisco Giants signed RHP Tim Hudson to a 2yr/$23M contract.

This is a nice deal for the Giants. Hudson was pitching good before that freak injury ended his season. I'm a little surprised the Braves didn't at least try to match this offer. The Giants will have a solid rotation next year with Cain, Bumgarner, Lincecum and Hudson.

So much for AJ back to Sox as platoon or broadcaster. With this money he gets a one year $4M somewhere.

AJ had a pretty good year in Texas. With so many teams looking for catching this off season I wouldn't be surprised if AJ gets himself a 2 year deal.

Now Josh Johnson is interested in San Fran. If these guys all have good years they could have an incredibly dominant staff .

Why would this mean he gets 4 million? If anything, I would think this contract signals that he will be at about the same amount as last year, which I believe was 7 million.

I imagine that Ruiz contract is about what it will take to get Saltalamacchia.

I figured at the end of his career he would platoon and have to take a cut.

The Tigers and Rangers have agreed on a deal that would send Prince Fielder to the Rangers in exchange for Ian Kinsler.

Holy crap Holy crap Holy crap Holy crap Holy crap Holy crap. I not sure what the Tigers are thinking but they better get more than Ian Kinsler for Prince.

Fielder has 7yr/$168M left on his deal. I guess I forgot just what a monster deal he signed. Kinsler has 4yr/$68M (with a $10M option in '18 and a $5M buyout). Maybe if Texas takes on all that salary it would be a 1-1 deal.

Yeah, depending on how much Detroit ate of that deal ... i think they want Cabrera to stay healthy n take it easy @ 1st base . kinsler to third maybe.

...and he lets his off field shit interfere with his play. They didn't pay him 200 large to have a down year because he feels bad about his divorce

Detroit is sending Texas $30M so they should be getting another player.

Now it's being reported that there are no other players involved. I just don't get this for Detroit. Sure they're saving money they can use to resign Scherzer but this is a huge loss to their offense. Why sign Prince in the first place if you're going to turn around and pay him to play somewhere else 2 years later??

Jon Daniels made his team a lot better tonight.

Think this works out for both teams, prince should drop 25 lbs in that texas heat n hit better...i was told the divorce prince is going through is due to his old lady banging a teammate ( the young kid the sox just got) ...i like prince hope it all works out for him.

i think it's pretty obvious what detroit is doing here, with or without any potential extracurricular activities for mrs. sandberg-fielder over there:

detroit got the fear of god put in their eyes when migcab was breaking down during the stretch/playoffs this year. yeah it was nice of him to volunteer to play 3B in the wake of getting prince, but it's not like prince was making all that much difference by himself (although i suppose an argument could be made that migcab had his far and away best offensive years with prince batting behind him) so detroit wasn't just looking ahead to the ungodly amount of $$$ they'd have to pay for a player likely in some sort of precipitous decline (albeit not quite at the level that your los angeles angles of angleheim are going to suffer. twofold.) and they figured if they could recoup anyone useful alongside the added benefit of maximizing your migcab at 1B/DH, hey, it's a win. if dumping prince now means that 2016-17 migcab is that much healthier, then that's definitely a benefit of this trade.

it's a bit of a swing for the fences move for texas, who you figure would let nelson cruz walk and then need some sort of imposing middle of the lineup bat to try and rebuild the vaunted rangers offense around. it's a roll of the dice, and hey who knows playing in that texas ballpark in 70-80 degree weather in april could help out prince to get back to his more gaudy ~125+ RBI totals, but more likely you're just gonna see what you've seen in detroit tapering off over the course of a very costly contract that texas could afford to pay.

so if you look at this from a detroit perspective of upgrading prince fielder to migcab at 1B and then dumping all of that cash and getting a declining star 2B back, well then they're the freaking tigers they can go work something out for a 3B via free agency / trades / whatever. people show up at their games and i'm not gonna worry about any financial crisis hamstringing the illitches. i love crazy bread dammit. i think they saw the ceiling of the migcab/prince teams and are prolly better off in the mid/long-term future for having done this move. imagine if the cubs were proactively able to dump soriano after 2008!

Maybe, but I really think they are going to regret that long contract. I hope not, as I like Prince, but that is a lot of years and money left on that deal.
