At 4-5 my son sat down and watched full hockey games. Don't know if he understood it then, but by 6-7 he did. Maybe some of it is the experience of something special, staying up late or spending time with a parent or Grandparent and he was playing then. That's what makes you a passionate fan, imo. Loving the game and making those connections with somebody important in your life. I'd bet your favorite sport is because of somebody that watched or took you to games or that you love playing it.

Jimmy a lot of fans above 18 don't know what there really watching.

I don't get the bernstein-esq arrogance. Who cares if the caller takes pride in stating s/he was at the game, is a lifelong fan, or finds talking to doug and OB an honor and a privilege? And why must every fan be an expert? If only experts attended or watched watched games and listened to sports radio stadiums would be mostly empty, ratings would be dismal, there wouldn't be much money for salaries and the whole thing would be pretty boring.

Right. I would submit that "fan" and "expert" are often exclusive of each other. If you're an "expert" you start to focus on admiring LeBron James rather than rooting for Kirk Hinrich.

But don't forget, bernstein was at every Bears game in 1995. That's how he knows Kramer wasn't as good as Cutler.
