Mike Tomlin's sideline dance in front of Ravens returner Jacoby Jones could end up hurting the Steelers in more than a fine.

Ian Rapoport of NFL.com reports that the NFL could not only fine Tomlin and the team, but possibly take away one of the Steelers' draft picks. The league clearly doesn't want anyone else to think about pulling this shit again.

The most recent case similar to Tomlin's act happened a few years ago. Remember Sal Alosi, the Jets' strength and conditioning coach? His trip of Dolphins player Nolan Carroll eventually led to his firing—along with a $25,000 fine—and a $100,000 fine for the Jets. There was no loss of draft pick, though. And Alosi actually tripped a player.

Obviously, Tomlin not making contact with Jones doesn't mean he wasn't trying, but loss of a draft pick seems excessive. Then again, Roger Goodell gets a boner for setting precedents and making statements with his punishments, so while that kind of ruling would be severe, it wouldn't be surprising.

Draft pick seems a bit much for this.

goodell has a hard on for having a hard on on this league. he kind of deserves for this league to implode by the greedy way he handles it.

Yep, no place for this bull shit and you have to discourage anybody from wanting to do something like that again. I can't believe the Rooney's are very happy with him either.

If I'm an NFL coach I am telling my players to run over a coach on the sidelines like that.

Correct. It's dangerous, unsportsmanlike and cheating. Suspension, pay withholding and whatever else comes his way are deserved. I'd like to see the organization take the lead on this and tell him to sit out next week.

Lose a draft pick, seems a bit serious.

Kevin Mchale did something equally stupid last week, and nothing even happened to him. Gregg Poppovich was even tossed trying to argue what happened. He basically was guarding a full court inbounds pass from Tim Duncan.

What is with dick moves by coaches this past week? First we got the Jason Kidd intentional spilled drink to stall the game:

and then this Tomlin move, and now the Mchale move. Coaches should just have to sit in a chair on the sidelines all game, or put a uniform on themselves if they want to physically involve themselves in the action.

A coach tripped a player a couple of years ago and Goodell didn't react like this. This is beyond extreme. He should get nothing more than a fine. IF he does the same thing but his foot doesn't come on the field this wouldn't be an issue. His foot barely came into the field of play.

He was trying to get in the way and he could have easily ended someone's career.

The punishment should be so severe that no one ever thinks about doing it again. Ill agree that if it happened a couple years ago, the harsh punishment should have come then.

Yep! So what would have happened if that guy tripped and suffered a major injury? That would have been something. I figured one of the Ryan brothers pulling this kind of shit.

The Rooneys will voluntarily forfeit a draft pick before Goodell can take it away so that Mike Florio can lead yet another Circlejerk Across America for how magnanimous and wonderful the glorious Rooney family is.

Rex Ryan would trip a guy while trying to kiss their feet.

They should lose a draft pick and Tomlin should be fined six figures. This is a bigger deal that some special teams coach or whoever the fuck did it before.

Also the refs should have realized what happened and awarded Jones a TD on the play.

My favorite Charlie Weis moment was him getting double knee rolled on the side lines.

Psssht, Ive been saying the Rooneys are assholes since Mickey's racist, stereotypical , performance of a Jap in Breakfast at Tiffanys.

The Jets were fined $100k, the asst coach was fined $25k and suspended for the remainder of the season.

This is different because it is the head coach, and there is precedent that this is not allowed. This doesn't seem that extreme to me.

I agree with the harshest punishments possible among those that have been suggested (deep fines, suspension, taking away a pick, etc.)

This ended up not preventing the Ravens from winning, but what if it did? Short of altering the outcome of the game post-fact, there's really nothing you could do to appease the Ravens. What you do instead is come down hard on the Steelers, which is what I hope they do, with the ultimate goal of making it clear that such BS can never happen again.

taking away a draft pick is WAY overboard. I believe Tomlin in his explanation that he was focused on watching the return on the jumbo tron and until he saw himself on the jumbotron he didnt know he was near the field of play

edit: i just saw this view... makes tomlin's explanation look like BS

So after viewing the video are you on board with taking away a pick? I think the speculated punishment is so severe because the league agrees with you: Tomlin's explanation is BS.
