Technically, it's 2-2.

I guess you've stopped blaming the defense?

The Cutler PPG versus McCown PPG lacks much context for that reason. In the beginning of the year the Bears defense was creating turnovers.

If McCown has better stats, and has generated more points per possession (with poorer starting field position thanks to a deteriorating defense/special teams), what argument is there for starting Cutler, much less signing him? That doesn't mean McCown should become next year's starter; I think Trestman can quickly develop someone to be better than both.

That said, I'm sure Cutler will get paid somewhere. Look at the pile of crap in the Buffalo/Tampa game yesterday. The losing QB had four picks (rating 31.2) and the winning QB was 9/25 for 90 yards and 2 picks (rating 40.4).

Why shouldn't McCown be next year's starter?

I know what he's done but I still think you can't trust him to repeat it.

He's too old.

I think it was on the Score this morning that I heard Trestman supposedly sees a lot of Rich Gannon in McCown.

I really hope that report is accurate.

Why?

Gannon's career path pre Trestman is about the same as McCowns

Well you aren't going to give him 5 years. Why not give him 1 or 2?

For the same reason you don't bring back Cutler. The future needs to have a great chance of playing next year.

It's ok if McCown is competing with a rookie next year with everyone knowing the rookie is the future like Tannehil had in Miami. However, McCown can't be the planned starter next year.

I think the only thing McCown confirmed this year is that he's a viable backup in this system.

I don't understand that, though. Don't you think McCown is playing well enough to be comfortable as your QB next year?

I want him competing with a first round draft pick. If he wins the job then I'd feel comfortable with it. McCown isn't the future. He gives them a little more leeway in case the rookie isn't ready from day one.

But can't you play McCown next year as the #1 and develop a guy at the same time? Can't you do that with Cutler to a certain extent?

I would hope that any first round draft pick is better than McCown.

I'd have no problem with McCown starting in week 1 but I certainly don't think he should start training camp as the announced starter.

First round QB's aren't really sitting on the bench any more unless they are really bad.

There are weird circumstances at play:

1) Cutler is slightly better than McCown, but the price tag won't be worth the upgrade;
2) McCown is good, but not good enough to carry a team for 16+ games
3) A 2014 rookie will have all the opportunities in the world to develop his game if Cutler is out of the picture next year

First round QBs are also starting, and playing horribly.

That's the chance you take.

You don't have to take that chance if you bring back McCown and let him start, though. You can let the QB develop in the system as the backup.

Read my last few posts here.

Let McCown come back, but I hope the rookie QB beats him out. I don't want McCown to be the defined starter even before the draft.

The idea of McCown starting an entire season scares me. I am still waiting for him to look like the McCown I knew and hated.

If Cutler came cheap you could let him redshirt his rookie year. There will be a lot of talented QB's available in the offseason that will come substantially less than Cutler.

I don't see how Jay Cutler being there does anything but hurt the development of a rookie QB.

Next week, the Bears play last years backup,Jason Campbell who just threw for 391 yards & 3 TD's in a losing effort. Bring him back with McCown!

I can see that. I am afraid of McCown.

Did McCown score enough points to placate some of you?

Someone will still say Cutler would have scored more. At this point going away from McCown should be a fireable offense.

Keep in mind that the Cowboys defense is absolutely putrid, and they looked like they wanted no part of being out there in the cold.

That said, gotta stick with the hot hand. Especially going on the road in a short week. A QB on a roll like this could really take you far into the playoffs if the defense could even just play at a below average level and not bottom of the league level.

He played very well again. Also, should have had 3 passes picked off. Thankfully, Dallas D is worse than the Bears and were clearly freezing and did not want to be out there last night.

You are watching with Jay Cutler's interests at heart

I hope your not counting the Jeffrey TD as a shoulda been pick

Cutler usually throws 2 picks and has 3 more that should have been picked. So were making progress.
