Recent reports have linked Padres third baseman Chase Headley to the White Sox, and Dan Hayes of CSN Chicago adds some more details to that story, noting that the two sides have discussed the switch-hitting Headley numerous times. However, Chicago GM Rick Hahn is loath to meet counterpart Josh Byrnes' request of including Jose Quintana as part of the package.

As Hayes notes, Quintana can be controlled for another five seasons, and the Sox like the pairing of he and Chris Sale at the front of their rotation for the foreseeable future. The Sox are more amenable to trading fellow lefty Hector Santiago, according to Hayes, and they've likely offered him in potential deals for Headley. However, one big league evaluator told Hayes that Santiago's value has been negatively impacted by pitching in the same rotation as Quintana, as teams are frequently more interested in talking about Quintana, who is more consistent.

Though Headley figures to be one of the most oft-discussed players at this week's Winter Meetings, the Padres don't expect to trade their third baseman, sources tell Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times. As for the White Sox, previous reports have indicated that the White Sox consider Quintana, Sale and Avisail Garcia to be untouchable in trades.

Why in the hell would Quintana be considered untouchable?

Good question. You already have "Losing Pitcher" John Danks who isn't radically different. Santiago is a guy with nasty stuff who seems to have the bigger upside. If I thought I could sign Headley, I'd trade Quintana for him in a minute.

Quitana's career record is 2 games over .500. Danks career record is 13 games below .500

The way you hold a pitcher's W-L record, they should absolutely be radically different to you.

Okay. "Losing Pitcher" John Danks has proven to be no damn good. I only suspect Quintana will turn out to be less than good. But over the course of the next couple seasons they don't figure to be radically different and it would be well worth taking the chance to get a real third baseman to replace Gillaspie or Keppinger or whatever rookie you think is going to go out there everyday. I'm all for trading "Losing Pitcher" John Danks rather than Quintana. It's just a lot more difficult to do.

1yr/$1.75M with an option for 2015. Starting pitching depth is good.

Trading for Headley doesn't make much sense to me unless you think you can lock him up to a long term deal. He'll likely get a raise from his 8M of last year to 10M and can become a FA after that.

He cashed in huge on that 2012 season and regressed back to his standard numbers (.250-.265 with 10-15 HR and 50-60 RBI)

Sure his WAR is better than anything the Sox are running out there, but I'm not buying that for 24M/2years (or whatever his demand is)

True, that's probably the low end of what he'll get.

Potential 3 team trade per Keith Law:

Skaggs and Santiago to Angels

Adam Eaton to White Sox

Mark Trumbo to D'Backs

I'd rather just find the second guy to throw in to get Trumbo.

I dunno. You better be damn sure about Eaton. His claim to fame was hitting .380 in the minors a couple years ago. In the majors he's been suck.

If that is all the Sox get that is a real bad deal.

White Sox taking a long hard look at Rule 5 catcher Adrian Nieto... if they make this move it would certanly change Flowers/Phegley roles for 2014.

That would be a big jump for Nieto - going from High A to the major leagues in one year and being productive.

How is the flagship station with the plugged in producers not breaking news about this trade?

12:33pm: The White Sox have asked the Halos about Hank Conger this winter, but he's not believed to be in play on this trade, tweets Bill Shaikin of the L.A. Times.

12:22pm: The deal is "getting pretty close," a source tells MLB.com's Alden Gonzalez (Twitter link). Though he was discussed in a separate trade with the White Sox and Angels, Kendrick is not part of this deal, Gonzalez adds.

12:10pm: USA Today's Bob Nightengale reports that the three teams are optimistic about their chances of finalizing the trade (Twitter link). Meanwhile, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic agrees with Gilbert's report from below, noting that Arizona would receive one prospect from the Angels and one from the Sox (also on Twitter).

11:38am: MLB.com's Steve Gilbert tweets that Arizona would receive a pair of good prospects in addition to Trumbo.

11:27am: Dan Hayes of CSN Chicago (via Twitter) hears that the talks are definitely ongoing but are still in the preliminary phases. The three sides are making some progress but a deal isn't close at this time, Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register agrees (on Twitter).

11:02am: The Angels tried to land Santiago from the White Sox in talks for Howie Kendrick, tweets Bill Shaikin of the L.A. Times, but they're now focused on getting him as part of this three-team deal.

10:50am: ESPN's Keith Law reports (via Twitter) that the Mark Trumbo talks between the Diamondbacks and Angels have expanded to include the White Sox, with a potential framework sending Adam Eaton to Chicago and Hector Santiago and Tyler Skaggs to the Angels.

We'll see what Jim O'D has to say about that. A wife and three kids.
