The Sox could not continue with 4 lefties in the rotation. No one is taking Danks contract and Sale is close to untouchable so it came down to Quintana and Santiago as being the odd lefty out. Quintana is a more complete pitcher in my opinion and better suited to be a 2/3 starter.

No need for two good outfielders?

I think they could have gone with all those lefties. Each one is different enough.
Quintana is definitely more polished, but I hate to lose a "stuff" guy like Santiago who has hasn't reached his potential. We're choking on Danks. That's the real problem.

I think it's too early to say either are good. Checking their stats they both possessed zero power in the minors and small sample in the Show they didn't hit for much average. Tough justifying putting both out there.

He was in the 40's before last season. In their midseason update - here was his listing:

Big league arrival has been delayed by elbow injury, but Diamondbacks could use him now.

Now that he's with the Sox I'm sure his prognosis has been downgraded to "fourth outfielder at best" while Hector Santiago is now projected as an ace in 2015.

So long as you understand that this Eaton guy has a long way to go to do what DeAza has already done.

It sounds like the Sox will also send OF Brandon Jacobs to the D'Bags.

Well maybe that's why they didn't add him to the 40 man roster.

Baseball Prospectus NEVER had Eaton in it's TOP 101 prospects. Last year he was 8th in the Snakes top 10 list. Here is what they said.

Strengths: Louder tools than people realize; arm is very strong; good utility; very good athlete with plus run; knows how to handle the bat; works himself into favorable hitting conditions; quick to the ball with contact ability; shows aptitude for all three outfield spots; quality glove; quality range; nothing fancy, but makes plays.

Weaknesses: Well below-average power; hit tool unlikely to play as plus at highest level; limited size and strength; needs to stay in center to have value as starter.

Overall Future Potential: 5; solid-average regular

Explanation of Risk: Low risk; mature tools; already played at major-league level.

Fantasy Future: He can get on base, he can swipe some bags, and has enough sting in the stick to keep pitchers honest; pretty solid profile in center field that quickly loses value in a corner.

The Year Ahead: With contact ability, a good approach, and plus speed, Eaton has some offensive upside. He isn’t going to hit for power, and with a hit tool that looked better against minor-league pitching than it will against major-league pitching, he might only hit in the .270 range, but the defensive versatility and secondary skills are his ticket to a long major-league career. The majority of sources on Eaton felt he could start in center field and produce enough at the plate to justify the spot. If the bat doesn’t play up to the projection, the profile shifts to a fourth-outfielder type, but one that will offer good value given Eaton’s baseball skills and overall approach to the game.

Eaton was hurt as the 2013 season unfolded. I believe he may have returned too quickly. He tried too hard to live up to his very positive advanced billings as a speedy contact hitter with good defensive ability.

Eaton fell short of expectations by failing to get on base often enough to use his plus speed to steal bases. In addition, he got some late reads on balls hit to center field and struggled at times to be the defender he had always projected. His playing time diminished as A.J. Pollock saw increased opportunities to play center field as the season wore on.

With the White Sox, Eaton will have a fresh start. He can become a successful center fielder in the AL Central.

Santiago goes to a good pitching environment in Anaheim. As a 6-foot, 210-pound lefty, he can pitch at any point of the game. He can start, or pitch in long or short relief.

Santiago has some work to do with his command, as he has walked an average of 4.5 hitters per nine innings. But the Angels likely see the same potential scouts have seen from Santiago. He has a good arm that, with refinement and coaching, has the potential to be an impactful one.

Santiago has an outstanding repertoire of pitches. He just has to learn sequencing and pacing of that full repertoire to get the maximum from his ability. He throws a four-seam fastball at 91-92 mph, a sinker, a cutter at 87 mph, a changeup, a curveball and a screwball.

Former Athletics and Cardinals pitcher Mark Mulder is hoping to return to the big leagues. Representatives of three big league teams watched Mulder pitch last month, and he says he threw 89-90 MPH.

God I hope the Sox were one of those teams. It's a long shot considering how long he's been out of the game but if he's healthy he would make an outstanding left handed reliever.

I don't know anything about eaton but if kw was anywhere near this you can bet the sox minimized value. Seeing that the dbacks got a young 30-100 hitter and the angels got 2/5 of a rotation while talking the sox into giving another player on top of it ill work under that assumption until april

What the D'Bags really got is a guy with a .294 OBP, 184 strike outs and he can't play left field dead. This was a horrible trade for them.

I love being a Sox fan and reading all of us having a critical eye. So strikingly different than the cubs off season or prospect thread.
