Texans WR Andre Johnson drops $19K on toy shopping spree for charity

By Jay Busbee, Shutdown Corner

Here's an NFL story designed to warm your heart and terrify your wallet. Texans wide receiver Andre Johnson, one of the league's unquestioned good guys, on Tuesday performed what's becoming an annual ritual for him: a Toys R' Us shopping spree for at-risk youth in Houston.

Johnson's Foundation, the Andre Johnson Charitable Foundation, funded the spree, in which 12 children selected by Child Protective Services had 80 seconds to fill up their carts with as many toys as they could. And oh, could they fill those carts.

"You hear a minute and twenty seconds, and you don't think that's a long time, but you'd be surprised by what these kids can put into their buckets," Johnson said afterward. You can see his gargantuan receipt in the photo at right.

The children, ranging in ages from 8 to 16, have all suffered parental abuse in some form and now live with extended family members. But each child made sure to purchase toys for siblings and other relatives as well.

Johnson's foundation performs several works throughout the year for children in both Houston and Johnson's Miami hometown. But he told the team's website that it's the Toys R' Us event that he enjoys the most.

"I think it's probably the best one because you get to see the kids really enjoy it," he said. "That's what this season is about. It's something I look forward to. The kids are happy, they get what they want for Christmas, and that's all that matters."

After the spree, Johnson also joined the Houston Police Department's Blue Santa program to surprise 800 students at Houston's Bastian Elementary School with Christmas presents.

Johnson stressed that he had traveled the path many of these kids were on, and he hoped they could learn from his example: "I grew up in a single-parent home and I was fortunate to achieve my goals," he said. "So, whatever goals you have, just keep them out in front of you, don't let anybody distract you away from them, because there will be distractions that try to detour you away from your goals. That's the biggest thing."

I thought there might have been a thread about Johnson, who is at it again:

Andre Johnson continues to do the right thing in Houston.

The Texans' wide receiver held his seventh annual toy giveaway Tuesday morning, giving 12 children and their brothers and sisters 80 seconds to grab whatever they could at a local Toys R Us.

The children, who were picked from child protective services, were able to rack up a total bill of $17,352. Each child also received a gaming system and two games.
"It's fun," Johnson said. "It's fun for the kids and it's fun for me. It's something I enjoy seeing every year, so I figure why not keep doing it?"

Absolutely.

I dont mean to take anything away from him. It just made me think about people who do donate large sums anonymously.

Agree, it's when you see the posing with the reciepts " hey look at what I did" seems a little self serving but some kids are going to have a better Xmas because of it so its hard to rip on him for doing it.

Only on the CSFMB can a guy do something nice and someone still finds fault with it.

Save the eye roll.

It's not a criticism of Johnson, it's a compliment to those who do it quietly.

How many times do I have to say it's Awesome for it to not be "finding fault"

I think it's harder for people to do things like that (or to do anything, for that matter) quietly these days. Someone at the store (an employee or someone from place the kids are from) might have wanted to take his picture with the receipts, which naturally gets posted to Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram whether he wants it to or not.

I don't know if that's what actually happened, just throwing it out there.

This is a direct criticism of him, saying it would be even "awesomer" if he kept it quiet.

Just giving an opinion . It's nice that he did it . I wouldn't say it's finding fault with it but he sure didnt stop someone from taking those photos each time to show what a nice thing he's doing. Overall it's better he did do this than not and for that yes, he deserves praise.

No, it's not.

You need to look up the definition of criticism.

And again, the comment is flanked by me saying it's awesome, twice.

To this and TQ's point, I'd add that there is a difference between him posing for some individual photos, and generating press about his gifts through a professional PR firm, which also does happen. The attention around his deed seems to have grown organically, from isolated sources, to reporters, to blogs, etc., rather than him deliberately contacting media reps through his agency to broadcast what he's done. I obviously don't know what his intention was through posing for the photos, but I just thought the distinction between attention growing organically, and deliberately created attention, was warranted.

Honestly, I dont want to argue about this. It's silly even for the CSFMB.

Andre Johnson is great and this thing he did is great. It just reminded me of the people that do it anonymously

This is just him making up for all the children the Texans have made cry this year.

"Mr Johnson, would you mind holding those receipts up in 2 consecutive years so we could take a photo ? "

"No thanks, id rather let the action speak for itself.

" oh ok , no problem".

This is his annual thing....why would he not want to publicize it? You think this is the only "charitable" thing he does every year?

Its not about Johnson. I think it's really cool when people do it anonymously. Is that ok?

And I dont even think Johnson is publicizing it. It just got out.

I have a cousin who worked retail about 8 years ago, and Lance Briggs came in and did something similar. I don't think he spent quite as much, but still it was several thousand. The following year the area supervisor really got on them about sales being lower than last year. Well, when there is one transaction that is about 500 times your average ticket it kind of skews the numbers a little bit.

Johnson = good. Area sup= dickhead.

Fair enough. I would give what you're saying more merit if a notoriously bad guy did it for the publicity, but Andre Johnson is a long time good guy, except for when he beating Cortland Finnegan's ass...

Camps FWIW , George Lucas just pledged 10 million for some kids education thing here last week. Read that in the paper. Again, it's great that he did it but its obvious he wanted that to get out for whatever reason. For my taste , it'd be cooler if it was done anonymously .

Not true about Briggs. I know has personally donated tens of thousands to the "Athletes who fix smashed and abandoned Lamborghini's on the shoulder of expressways to avoid DUI's"'fund
