He broke bad on the Cubs and said he got rid of his season tickets.

It seems like a stupid move. You continued to own them through the worst of times and are now on the cusp of something presumably good

yes but he is in his 60s and had that job forever. I would bet he could retire on what he has but he also still has several jobs that collectively make a decent income
