Now that Tenn has basically let it be known they will sign cutler for $18 M a year, you have to figure that is probably a 5 year deal, with first 3 guaranteed. Why would he take anything less to stay here?

If he gets franchised, thats $16.8 Mill I read? thought it was more, but $16.8M, then you have a team with what you hope is a better offense next year and get me a 15th ranked defense, now you are looking for playoff spots! Go to an NFC Championship game, then lock him up for a second franchise year?

An issue is what I referred to before when I said the Bears are cash poor. Guaranteed money is not the same as a signing bonus.

Let me add, Rivers is a $16+M guy next year. NO WAY, Jay takes less than Rivers!

As much as they legally can. They can not directly communicate it.

They declined Lockers option next year and dont have a QB for next year. Jay has a house there, went to school close enough, still loves it there.

Its a no brainer.

Cutler won't get anyone to pay him close to Rivers. They aren't in the same league.

Rivers is a slightly more pissy Tony Romo.

So what if Jay plays in the NFC!

What argument is there for signing Cutler to 18m+ for several years if they can just franchise him for a little more than 16m? (And then they can do it again if he performs well.) His injury history alone just screams for either the tag or letting him walk.

If he pouts like a little bitch when everyone is kissing his ass, just imagine how pleasant he's gonna be when he has to take less money to stay in Chicago for a year or two when his hometown team wanted to bring him back to Nashville for bigger bucks.

Why would anyone who doesn't have to live in a trailer want to live in Tennessee?

I'm worried it's not just Tennessee, but that a few other teams will get into a little of a "bidding war" for him, maybe Arizona? Houston? Others?

He could get quite a bit of $$.

It would make the decision a lot easier.

But who is gonna replace him? This is not a team that is well known for finding QB's. That's a legit concern for this fanbase.

That cannot factor into the thought process. They just hired a GM 2 years ago. They have to trust he is up to the task.

I am comfortable with Cutler leaving and drafting a QB this year while signing a veteran to hold the position if he cannot start from day 1.

I'm telling you guys right now. Cutler cannot stay. He can not handle living in McCown's shadow, especially after signing a monster deal like that. He'll be the most hated man in town.

hes too expensive to stay. if he accepts a deal for millions less to stay in chicago it would go against everything we know about him.

hes gone

and mcowen is our #1 quarterback. this is what you all wanted. a 35yo backup.

Nashville has a lot going for it. I've considered relocating there the less and less I enjoy winter each year.

I don't see why Houston wouldn't just draft a QB. They'll be able to pick anybody they want. I doubt AZ pays him anything close to 5/80 just to come match Palmer's production.

I just don't see where he could get close to $18 million/year from anybody. He's not nearly good enough. He was considered worse than Matt Schaub 12 months ago. I could see how he would be a decent fit for teams like the Titans/Jets/Vikings, etc. But they cant be that stupid fiscally, right?

just off the top of my head, there is no doubt that Vick and Schaub will be cut.

Schaub on a reasonable two year deal and a high draft pick QB sounds like a wonderful alternative to me.

Please tell me you did not just list Vick as a possible replacement for Cutler.....

Very similar. Liked memphis a little better, its actually one of the better places to live in the US due to Fed EX HQ there. Employment is not an issue there. not saying they are the highest paying jobs, but good jobs with good benefits.

Large companies, like Apple, Panasonic, etc have repair factories all actually attached to the Fed Ex facility. So when you return items, via fed Ex, you basically just gave it right back to the company. Your products (Returns, Repairs) never see a truck while in memphis.

do a google map search of memphis intl airport, then look at the North end of the runways and see the Fed Ex Facility and its about ten times the size of the passenger terminal with about 100 jets.

I never understood why Jay decided to live in Nashville since he isn't from there. It's not about being close to family. His family is in rural Indiana. I know he went to college there, but you'd think somebody with his money would move on from that town. His college buddies probably don't live there. I can't believe that Hollywood wife of his would want to spend Jay's off season in Nashville.

You would even think Jay and his wife would actually enjoy spending the Spring and Summer in Chicago over Nashville.

If Al Davis were still alive, the Raiders would be a perfect spot for Cutler.

I think the average will be 17 million.

So he'll sign for 5 years at 85 million with 40 million being guaranteed. That pretty much means you have to committ to him for 3 years. After year 3, if it's not good, you cut him.

With the Bears in good cap space, you'd front load the 1st year where his base salary is the highest in year one. Maybe 20 million base salary in year one. I'm pretty sure that's what the Saints did with Brees.

Then you have more money to spend for the rest of his years.

That's a horrible deal for the Bears. Emery would be insane to do that.

I think we analyze this way too much. Let's say you get a deal and the average is 16 million per year. It will be no less than that. Cuz the "Tag" number is a little more than that.

So is 5 years at 85, with 40 guaranteed really that much different than 5 years at 80 with 35 guaranteed? No.

Is that extra money really gonna make or break your cap? That's really gonna effect your football team to the point that you can't get a decent roster? No.

Good QBs make a lot of money. You have to have one.

So if you like him, which Emery and Trestman do, that 5 million dollars won't be the difference of signing him or not. It just won't.

Nashville & the surrounding area is great...and cheap as hell.

Fine. But Cutler and his wife are in a position where they can pay a little bit more on real estate/state taxes in a better city. They can afford higher gas prices too. They don't need to worry about cost of living.

Hey, he likes living there. To each his own. I just don't get why since he's not from there.

Both are still way too high for a slightly above average starting quarterback. If we were talking about Philip Rivers who has shown signs of being elite then it would be fine.

Cutler will likely be the 10th-15th best QB in the league his whole career. He's closer to Carson Palmer than you want to admit.
