This is a disaster for Texas. It's not so much that they missed out on Saban. It's that they missed out on Saban and they still have a coach. They now probably have to work out a deal with Mack Brown to let him coach the bowl game, get his full payment which isn't a big deal, and then they have to hope they don't have to settle for Butch Jones.

This could be massive for Texas A&M. At least in the short term, they have a legitimate shot of becoming the prominent program in the state, and playing in the SEC and not having the stupid Longhorn Network they may actually be able to get on an even playing field with them long term.

Texas needs to get a big name. Luckily they can pay for it.

Yeah this is a mess. Do they have a coach? Do they not have a coach?

If Brown is done, I am sure there will still be several good options for them. But nothing compared to Saban.

Now what would be intriguing is if they could get Harbaugh from the 49ers. I do not see that happening. But if they could find a way to do that then that would make all of this a lot better.

That would be a home run too.

I think they are going to have to throw huge money at Mike Gundy. While that would be an A+ for pretty much any program, it will be viewed as a B- at best hire.

This thing continues to be a mess

Quote:
Mack Brown will continue on as head coach at Texas, according to a report from Bobby Burton of 247sports.com.

However, nothing has been announced by either Brown or Texas officials.

Brown, new athletic director Steve Patterson and school president Bill Powers met Friday afternoon, and, citing an anonymous source, ESPN reported that Brown was "fighting to keep his job."

ESPN, citing a source, further reported that Brown had told some close to him that he was going to resign, but became "enraged" and changed his mind when that decision was leaked to the media.

Meanwhile, Friday night as Brown was speaking at the Longhorns team banquet, Alabama coach Nick Saban, who had been reported as a top target for the Horns, agreed to a contract extension and raise to stay in Tuscaloosa.

The embattled Brown gave no inclination during Friday night's banquet that he would step down and told new athletic director Steve Patterson that he's looking forward to working with him.

"ESPN has had the story wrong," Brown told an ESPN reporter after Friday's ceremony. "Everybody just needs to slow down. I have a good relationship with my bosses, Bill Powers and Steve Patterson, and I look forward to making the best decision (about my future)."

Patterson also spoke to the crowd, saying of Brown, "Hopefully we'll be able to get together and work for many years to come," according to the AP.

Patterson did not discuss Brown's future with reporters afterward, and a UT spokesman said Brown and Powers would not comment further.

"When we have something to announce, we'll announce it," Patterson told the AP.

Texas just completed an 8-4 regular season under Brown, but the 62-year-old Horns coach came under fire after a 1-2 start that included losses to Ole Miss and BYU. Texas rebounded to finish 7-2 in Big 12 play, but lost its chance to claim the conference title in the final week against Baylor.

Texas will play Oregon in the Alamo Bowl on Dec. 30.

The Longhorn Network is reporting that Mack Brown has stepped down as head coach. He will coach in the Alamo Bowl.

I know he signed an extension, but those don't mean anything in college sports.

One name I've heard mentioned as a possible contender for the job is Mike "I'm a man, I'm 40!" Gundy. OK State probably has enough money to get him to stay, but he's built a nice program with the Cowboys and could move up.

Mack Brown was prepared to coach the Texas Longhorns in 2014 until school president Bill Powers unexpectedly pulled his support, according to a report by Pat Forde of Yahoo Sports. Brown reportedly was told by Powers and new athletic director Steve Patterson he could return for his 17th season prior to the team's Dec.

They're having trouble finding a coach. Does that mean they are a B grade program? Because that's what you'd be saying if it were the Illini.

Please do not compare Texas and the Illini.

Texas getting turned down by Nick Saban is not the same as the Illini getting turned down by Shaka.

I don't really think Texas is having "trouble".

No doubt it was a mess and not what the boosters and fans expected or wanted.

But it is not like they had to settle for a guy from Akron.

Strong is recognized as one of the best young coaches in the nation.

Obviously no one is begging to coach Texas. I'm just pointing out that that isn't necessarily a reflection on the standing of the program. In fact, it's very similar to Illinois getting turned down by a couple of flavor-of-the-moment coaches. Someone will coach Texas and Texas is still a top football program and maybe THE top football program. Just like someone is coaching Illini hoops and they're still an excellent basketball program.

Stay consistent, RFDC.

Yes the situations are the same in that they both got turned down by their first coach and now currently have someone that will be coaching them.

The fact that they both have coaches is where the similarities between Texas football and Illini basketball begin and end.

The point is your narrative is different than it was with the Illini. Why aren't you saying, "HA HA HA!!!!!! Texas- no one wants to coach there. A struggling B-level program that will never compete with those top SEC teams or even Ohio State. HA HA HA!?" Because it would be a stupid thing to say. Just like it was stupid to say Illinois is a shit program because they got turned down by Shaka Smart. Shaka Smart has since turned down a lot of jobs. And soon enough people will say, "Who the fuck is Shaka Smart?"

And this is silly too. The MAC is known for being a "cradle of coaches", particularly Miami (OH), but I'm pretty sure Heisman coached at Akron.

Of course it is different. Texas football and Illini basketball do not belong in the same sentence.

Wasn't Crean like the 3rd or 4th choice too?

In modern day college athletics where everyone is highly paid I think the days of a school like Illinois getting anyone they want from a smaller conference is over. It may be gone for Indiana too.

You maybe right.

I don't think Crean was their 3rd or 4th choice. He was among the first names listed both when Sampson (ugh) was hired and then again when he was hired.

Yes. Here an article and quote that show's you how much we sucked and maybe still do:
Quote:
The source said that Indiana has been told that a potential buyout for Xavier's Sean Miller would be too rich for Indiana.

Indiana cares only about basketball and was afraid/cheap to buyout Miller.

Maybe that was a function of athletics being cash strapped with them pouring a shit ton of money in football stadium and building new field houses but still that's pretty shitty.

He was at least the third candidate serious candidate, and that is if you don't include Izzo, and was pretty low on the list prior to him become a legit candidate.

The funniest part was how Izzo was seriously mentioned as having "mutual interest".

Izzo
Tony Bennett
Mike Montgomery
Crean

In fairness to IU, I believe they were still paying Mike Davis, and would be paying something to Sampson too, along with two football coaches who were no longer there at the time.

Luckily John Cougar Mellencamp stepped up to buy out Sampson, seriously.

 only meatball fans thought Izzo was a possibility. I do not believe the school did, nor do I believe that they had Bennett or Montgomery higher on their list than Crean. Few was higher on the list. From what I recall, Crean was high on the initial list and then it was reported he was staying at MQ. Then when people had kinda put him out of the conversation he ends up being hired.
