Is it okay if I truly wasn't that impressed with the way Cutler played? Am I allowed to voice that opinion without everyone on the Score telling me I just don't like him personally? I don't even fucking know Jay Cutler personally, nor do I give a shit what he acts like. I was genuinely unimpressed with his performance and hope that he makes better decisions and more consistent throws in the future. I want the Bears to make a playoff run. Feel free to disagree, but don't give me this bullshit about not liking him (I'm looking at you Spiegel, Bernstein, Ten Foot Fucktard, and even a man I like - Mr. Doug Buffone).

And just for good measure, fuck Laurence Holmes, too.

I love agreeing with him on it. It's really the only common ground we have been able to find for the past six years.

Cutler is the best thing to happen to the Packers since Jim Dooley.

He's pretty entertaining on his radio show. It gets him close to likable.

Well, the Score hosts do a "good" job at discovering why a caller has a certain opinion. For instance, if you hate the NBA, you are a racist.

There are a lot of disturbing things with Jay's style. If he would have learned anything while watching Josh, I wish he would have seen that stepping up and throwing is a good idea. It amazes me that he continues to throw while backing up or just generally off his back foot. Also, he needs to spread that ball around to the open guy. This offense always seems to have an open guy, which means he needs to go through his reads and find that person.

I was glad the Bear's started Jay. If they intend to give him a long term deal, we need to see that he's healthy and what he can do with this offense.

There were throws that Jay completed that Micnoun couldn't have even attempted. I refer to the two short TD passes. There were throws that Jay had intercepted that Micnoun wouldn't have attempted.

There's no reason at all to think McCown wouldn't have attempted and also completed the TD pass to Bennett.

The one to Marshall was behind him and I think the defender got a hand on it, but not enough to knock it away.

Even more remarkable considering the backup gets zero snaps in practice.

It's not a 100% strawman. There are people who will hate Cutler no matter what.

Anybody can hate Jay Cutler, there is nothing wrong with that. My problem is the people that use their personal feelings towards him when they are looking at his play.

It works the same way for people that really like him. Judge the plays, not the man.

Exactly. We all want what's best for the Bears, even though only one of us is right (those of us in the McCown camp).

I haven't been listening to the score in months but the majority of people agree with me...cutty is not good, he's injury prone n too many turnovers . i would like him to sign elsewhere in a month. he gets zero credit for that grossmanesque td pass to alshon. that looked more like a punt return . Cutlers performance was typical Cutler yesterday ...not that great.

It's not always the case, but in this situation there really does seem to be a clear divide. You either like him, or hate him (and his face, and his personality, and his wife, and his shoulder twitch and his radio show).

I disagree. There are some who do, but there are many others with valid opinions that don't care either way about him personally. I am one of those people, and that's why the stereotype is irritating.

I agree with you on a national level. I disagree on a local level. Many national people are misinformed and still refer to his NFC Championship game against GB. Locally, people have seen enough of him to make informed opinions (other than a select few people who worship Mike North).

I heard several inane criticisms of Cutler on Sunday afternoon and early evening -- and it appeared the most of those callers had a genuine dislike for Cutler and the couldn't pronounce "McCown". Just saying.

That's fine.

That doesn't make him bad or McCown good though ... to whomever would prefer to subscribe to that fiction.

Correct, although I don't see anyone subscribing to either one. My argument (I can't speak for others) is that McCown is playing better than Jay Cutler right now, and it's not even close, once you account for turnovers.

I think the only fiction here is Cutler starting makes the Bears appreciably better than when McCown does. I don't think there's enough evidence to suggest the Bears are in better hands with him, so why mess with Mccowns groove at this crucial point in the season. It's like pinch hitting for someone in the middle of a 0-2 count.

Leash and Vegan, you are both reasonable about this, I agree. Let me demonstrate my case by using what I think is the critical game in the argument - the Minnesota game. That's the game that I believe Cutler would have won. That's the game where, on this board and everywhere else, I was told "it wasn't McCown's fault!" and "Trestman lost that game!"

Here's a breakdown of the Bears drives in that game. Mind you, Minnesota has the 31st ranked defense.

http://espn.go.com/nfl/playbyplay?gameId=331201016

3-and-out, punt
1 first-down, punt
INT, called back due to offsides. Perhaps McCown knew he had a free play. Don't know.
54-yard drive, FG

Punt
58-yard drive, FG
Punt

TD to Jeffery, 60 YAC
TD - pop-fly to Jeffery at the goal-line, very similar to the pass Cutler is being chided for

Punt
Fumble on Bears 19 - Turnover
Punt
Drive starts with :20, ball moves 2 yards, FG miss from 66

McCown fumble, recovered by Bears, punt
24-yard drive, missed FG

That's 7 punts. 7. 2 FGs. Two TD's largely due to Jeffery's abilities.
A turnover deep in Bears territory, and two others that were cancelled.
He was 2 for 10 on 3rd down.
The Bears were never in the red zone. All game. Not once.
McCown was sacked 4 times. I don't think Cutler has any 4 sack games this year. McCown is supposed to be better at evading pressure.

Again, all this against the 31st ranked defense.

How can you tell me "it wasn't McCown's fault!!", given that evidence??

How can you look at that performance, and say you want McCown to start on the road against Cleveland, who has a much better defense than Minnesota? How does this game show the offense moves the ball better with McCown?

McCown's throwing distance is limited. Not just down the field, but to the sidelines. When he has to throw to the sidelines, watch how long it takes for the ball to get there. Trestman has to limit the calls because of this. Other defenses, besides Dallas, can adjust to that.

Cutler had 2 regrettable turnovers yesterday, but still hung 31 points on a pretty decent defense despite them. The Cleveland defense held New England in check all day the week before, until a bad pass-interference call and an onside-kick recovery. And that was against Tom Brady.

I don't believe in momentum or hot hands or grooves. What happened against Dallas was not going to carry over to Cleveland. Cutler gave the Bears the best chance to win that game.

Where am I going wrong?

Right there. There's no way you can predict that. He was just as likely to keep posting 90 plus ratings .
