This is from a piece Matthew Pouliot wrote today
Quote:
That Molina and Davidson were the best the White Sox could do for young, cost-controlled save specialists shows there just aren’t as many gullible GMs as there once were.
His article was about how it was probably a good idea to trade the young closers as the Sox have recently but with so much cheap control over them they should have gotten a better haul.

good idea to unload Reed. Another guy I never liked that much. Not sure about the return. Was this the best they could have gotten at the trade deadline? maybe we are overvaluing Reed?

I liked Davidson last year when the shark to the dbacks rumors were swirling. The thing that should be concerning is why they would part with him when he was projected to be a guy that could fill a need they had at the big league level.

Ya know what nobody is talking about? How this compares to the North Side rebuild.

Ill say this, Id much prefer a quick Hahn like turnaround, but what The Cubs are doing (going young-young as opposed to near MLB ready young) is probably better suited to rebuilding the whole system.

Eaton is a steal. I love the moves.

Well, ya pick up 4 highly touted prospects, one and if you're lucky two of them will probably hit.

Great moves by Hahn

So I guess Rick Hahn doesn't wait to see if people show up to the ballpark to make moves. Interesting strategy.

I like what Hahn is doing. I think Konerko coming back is a mistake but its not really costing anything. If they can unload donkey it'll have been a great off season.

Having Konerko around all of these younger guys can only help them.

I still think they will do everything they can to move Dunn. I think if the Sox paid ~75% of his $ this year and got any kind of halfway decent prospect in return Dunn is as good as gone. When/If that happens, Konerko is a regular again.

So you think all Konerko's talk about being unable and unwilling to go full-time is bullshit? Maybe. Maybe he meant full-time at first. Would 400 at-bats at DH be full-time?

It depends. I think if he is banged up and the team sucks like last year, he is not going to try and kill himself to get back on the field. If the team is .500 and/or Konerko doesn't have the nagging injuries he had last year, he'll do whatever he can to help, and that includes getting 400+ at bats.

The White Sox and LHP Scott Downs have agreed on a 1yr/$4M contract. There is a vesting option for 2015.

Well there's your left handed reliever. It's like Hahn is working down a to do list. Hopefully trimming the fat off the roster is the next item on the list.

That's one, won't they need two? I don't want to see Donnie Veal out there in any meaningful situations unless he can throw strikes.

I'm sure there will be a competition for the 2nd left handed reliever spot during Spring Training. Veal will be in it along with Charlie Leesman, Frank De Los Santos who they traded for from the Rays and my guy Santos Rodriguez.

The White Sox claimed LHP Eric Surkamp off waivers from the Giants and waived 3B Brent Morel.

Surkamp (26 yrs old) is a soft tossing lefty coming off Tommy John surgery. He has fantastic minor league numbers but was roughed up in his brief major league career. He will provide depth in Triple A and possibly compete for the 5th starter spot.

Is Morel the Sox equivalent to the Cubs Gary Scott?

White Sox general manager Rick Hahn said that the club had an "exploratory" meeting with Masahiro Tanaka on Thursday in Los Angeles. Hahn, executive vice president Kenny Williams and manager Robin Ventura all participated in the meeting with the Japanese right-hander.

Bringing out the big guns for an "exploratory" meeting. I would be absolutely shocked if they signed Tanaka.

Why is KW invited to these meetings. He has shown over time to be poor in talent evaluation. He is not part of the financial team. He tends to rub people the wrong way. Also, he leaks information.

Kenny guards the door and yells at people he thinks are trying to listen in

Gary Scott was a can't miss prospect. I don;t think Morel ever reached that category.

Not sure where you are getting your can't miss information from Hawkeye..... but according to Baseball America in 1992 Gary Scott's rookie year he was their 76 ranked prospect.... in 2011 Brent Morel's rookie year BA had him as their 85 ranked prospect..... 76... 85... not sure either of those ranking qualify as can't miss and once you are past the Top 10 to 20 depending on year the rankings tend to be a real grab bag... looks like a pretty good comp to me.

The #Dodgers have let it be known they plan to go all-out in their efforts to sign Tanaka, saying they and certainly won't be out-bid.

I am really as unfamiliar with his work as the most obscure of minor league players. The reports I have read are all over the board on every aspect of his game. I have seen butcher in the field, average in the field, above average in the field, .230 hitter, .260 hitter, .280 hitter, slow bat, good bat, great power, 20 HR power...I have no idea what we are getting.

No worries. Here's what I'm hearing:

In all seriousness, Tanaka also wants a good place to play. Hey may want to play in LA/Chi, and he may not. May not be highest absolute bidder.

The Yankees, Dodgers and Angels are finalists to sign Masahiro Tanaka, according to Sports Hochi.

The Sports Hochi story lists the Yankees as the favorites to land Tanaka.

Scratch Santos Rodriguez.

The Arizona Diamondbacks have claimed Santos Rodriguez off waivers from the Chicago White Sox.

The left-hander was designated for assignment last week in order to clear a 40-man roster spot for Scott Downs.
