Basically McCown not coming back next year.

The GMs I reached out to did not think it was in any way out of the question McCown fetches offers worth $3.5M-$5M per season, and some thought that, if he had the opportunity to continue playing and got the Bears into the postseason, a deal in the range of Alex Smith's ($7.5M per year) would not have been out of the question.

That's just absurd. Who would give a mid-30s QB seven million based off of a half-season worth of games? Good for McCown if something close to that happens, but any GM who does that will probably be fired at the end of next season.

How much did Flynn get after one good game? All it takes is one idiot.

True, but Flynn at least had age going for him, and a stable record of employment behind Rodgers and in that GB system. McCown's history is all over the place, and he's much older than Flynn in sports years.

He's older in regular years, too. But, he doesn't have the miles of a 33 yr old starter. I don't know how many games he's played, but it's not ten years worth. QBs play well into their thirties. If the Bear don't bring him back, I hope he gets paid one last time. He seems like a good Joe.

Very few miles on that chassis. He'll probably get a decent payday with a chance to compete as a starter. There's a whole lotta bad QBing going out there. Josh should give 10% to Trestman.

Right. But he'd blow if he didn't have the receiver corps that the Bears have. He'll go somewhere else and revert to his regular unimpressive self.
We'll all have a hearty laugh over the putz that paid him more that 2 million. And that 7 mil referenced above? Insane.

This is accurate and all, but arm strength is tied to age as a QB, and for a guy who didn't/doesn't have top-tier arm strength to begin with, that's going to deplete moving forward even though he doesn't have that much wear and tear. In any case, I like him as well and want him to stick around, but if I were a GM I am not bringing him on as a starter, unless it's to hold the place of a prospect that's already on the roster. He's having a renaissance too late in his career for me to trust him with big money and, more importantly, trust him with the fate of my team for next season, assuming he signs with a contender or a team ready to be a contender.

I agree completely. However, he may have gained a better understanding of playing the position under Trestman. He's made some really good decisions over the last few games. I doubt he'll be as bad as he was. He certainly won't be as good as he has been. The truth lies somewhere in the middle, I suspect.

Trestman's offense is predicated more on accuracy and timing rather than arm strength.

I've been lobbying the last two months for him to be the placeholder for the Bear. Let Henry Higgins pick his project and spend, draft and spend on the D.

Meh.. the Bears had no way to know going into this season that they would wind up in this situation. I think offering a contract like this to a 34 year old mostly lifetime back-up is par for the course in almost any GM's eyes. Easy to look at the situation now and call it a fuck up, but I don't recall anyone talking shit about this contract until right now.

That said it will be hilarious to see what GM out there decides to roll the dice on McCown at 5 million a season if it comes to that.

Not paying $ 1 higher was ridiculous. That being said, let's hope they can find someone who can replicate McCown. I hope they choose not to bend over and pay Cutler knowing he's going to get hurt and knowing the $$ they need to drop to rebuild the defense.

Find the McCown and draft someone that plays to Trestman's system and develop him.

The Bears still should have given him $1 more so they would have more flexibility.

They paid Jason Campbell 3 million dollars for nothing. He was an absolute shit show. And now, they have screwed themselves financially on a more than capable backup.

This is what happens when you hire a GM from the incestual group of former or current Bears employees.

And how would Cutler look without this current crop of receivers.

That ranks right up there with not checking the box on Colvin or was it Holdman?

Is it common to sign guys to $1 over the minimum?

Besides, who cares? If it's true that McCown is worth so much on the open market, why would he jump and accept an extension with the Bears at a lesser amount? And, if he would do that, why would he only do it now, and not in March? Does the writer think he's the only one that knows McCown's open market value, and McCown and his agent don't????

I think any criticism of this one dollar thing is based in hindsight. It's unfortunate, but no one anticipated the wrong QB on the roster would have the breakout year.

Hopefully the Bears remember this and offer Cutler $1 more than the minimum for next year.

I am curious as to why this rule even exists. It does look like the Bears screwed up, but I wonder if McCown's agent pushed for the extra dollar.

There are plenty of good backup QBs out there who can do what Mc Cown is doing. There really should be no hand wringing if he were to leave.

Not sure this qualifies as a classic Bears fuck up

This is not in the realm of McGinnis or even the unchecked box

Adam Haaaawg explained this today. If you don't pay someone the extra $1, then you take a smaller cap hit for them. The Bears have 8 or so players that fit this description, and the combined salary cap savings allowed them to get Jeremiah Ratliff.

So probably this was a good move, not a screw-up.

McCown can still sign with the Bears for whatever good-hearted discounted price he wants to sign for in March.
