How did baseball survive for over 100 years without this? No one ever hit a line drive back at the pitcher?

That's going to look nuts. I miss the old days when guys came to the plate wearing their soft caps. That's when men were men.

Baseball survived. Herb Score's career didn't.

They could introduce the facemask like they do in softball.

And with it being optional, I don't envision many pitchers using it.

People just making jokes here? No one can really care that a pitcher would wear a helmet right?

"protective headgear" doesn't necessarily mean a helmet:

No, it's fine ... kinda surprised if they weren't "allowed" to already ... peer pressure would surely play some part in it now though ... if it's mandated, then nobody can really say anything, not to the level they could without it anyway.

People are always going to mock something like that at first. When Charlie Wait wore the first glove he had it made the same color as his hand so people wouldn't notice. They did notice and he was ridiculed. It took a popular guy like Al Spalding to make it okay to wear a glove without being laughed at. I would bet if a guy goes 15-8 with a 2.20 ERA wearing a helmet, no one will be laughing at him.

That wasn't to protect him from baseballs. It was to protect him from the bottles and batteries that were thrown his way in the Philadelphia outfield.

It is comparable to when they instituted helmets in hockey.

Let the pros choose to wear it. Make it mandatory in little league and it will be the norm in a decade.

He was wearing it playing for the White Sox at 1st base. They don't play Philly. I do think that is right though. I forgot about people doing that to him.

If they do anything, it should start with youth baseball. I know my reflexes aren't what they were, but the composite bats out now are so "hot," I can barely pitch batting practice to my son anymore without getting smoked.
