Chicago Bears defensive tackle Henry Melton was charged with misdemeanor assault and public intoxication after he was arrested early Sunday morning at a sports bar in Grapevine, Texas.
Melton “became belligerent with some of the staff members of the restaurant,” said Sgt. Robert Eberling of the Grapevine Police Department. “He was asked to leave. When he was in the process of being escorted from the restaurant, he struck one of the staff members. He was restrained at that point.”
Melton was arrested at 1:45 a.m. He posted $1,000 bond for the Class A misdemeanor assault charge and a $210 bond for the public intoxication charge, Eberling said.
In a statement, the Bears said: “We are aware of the reports regarding Henry Melton. We are currently gathering information to learn more about the circumstances surrounding the arrest.”
Eberling said the police report indicates that Melton punched the restaurant manager in the face and bit him on the arm. Four restaurant staff security people were needed to restrain Melton on the ground until police arrived, Eberling said. Melton received a cut to his nose during the altercation and medics were summoned, but Melton refused treatment, Eberling said.
Melton faces a court appearance for each charge. The public intoxication charge is a Class C misdemeanor, the equivalent of getting a ticket, Eberling said. The assault charge is a state offense that will require Melton to appear in municipal court.
Melton, 27, suffered a season-ending left knee injury in Week 3. He played this season on a one-year contract under the franchise tag. The Bears must decide this offseason whether to re-sign him.
