If Cutler stays the 85ish RTG, sometimes great, more often times reckless QB we've come to know and tolerate, this deal is the wrong move right?

Yes. He has to be elite for this to have been a good deal.

You can't even defend this one with "He won a Super Bowl" which is a fairly weak defense in itself.

You certainly can if the Bears win a super bowl within the next 3-4 years.

Yeah, that would be the trump card I guess.

Why would anyone think he would improve?

A lot of the local media, especially certain shows on WSCR, tried to promote the idea that the average Bears fan is a moron who thinks Josh McCown is great. That isn't close to the truth. What McCown's success demonstrated is simply how foolish it would be to pay a bunch of money to Jay Cutler who has only performed worse in the same offense.

I agree, they can defend the deal if Cutler wins the Super Bowl in the next 3-4 years. However, I don't think he will ever get to a Super Bowl (without a ticket), much less win one. Bad deal. For the 18 million a year this will average out to in the first few years, they could have just franchised him and not had the long term obligations. Dumb deal.

Yep. And how many times do we have to ask for Jay Cutler to improve!? It's mind-boggling. We've been saying he will improve with "a, b, c...." his entire career. At what point is it simply embarrassing and naive? (rhetorical)

Well, I was referring the Flacco deal, which only is defensible because he has just won a Super Bowl.

Of course something could happen to make the deal look great. I could sell my house and buy powerball tickets with it. If I won the big prize, it would look like I made a great deal too.

As I said all along, if Cutler wins a Super Bowl I am wrong about him. You'll get your "Jay Cutler apology thread" as soon I pray for forgiveness at my Jay Cutler sucks shrine.

JORR,
What you stated is fact that can not be argued. McCown shattered records as QB this season. He was elite among those that played in 2013 yet they sat him.

Joe Montana didn't have a great arm, but he made good decisions and was accurate with his throws. Cutler has a great arm, but makes poor decisions far too often. You don't need a cannon for an arm to be a good QB. McCown did plenty to demonstrate that, yet the Bears chose not to believe their own eyes.

Note....I am NOT attempting to compare McCown to Montana.

There's always an excuse for Jay. Losing is never his fault. His receivers and line sucked. They got him better ones. Then it was the defense's fault. That Green Bay game was there to be won. Going into the fourth quarter, whichever team had Rogers was going to win it. I guess I would ask, who is the great quarterback who didn't overcome obstacles? Or do we not think Cutler's great but it's just a matter of "who else are we gonna get?" Because that's kind of what it feels like.

on the good side, at least we will be front and center as Cavalleri descends into nuttiness when her "career" moves from obscurity to non existence

This too;

McCown shattered records as QB this season.

On November 11, Bears head coach Marc Trestman stated that Cutler is not expected to play the following week against the Baltimore Ravens, and McCown will most likely get the start.[29] McCown started his second game against the Ravens, completing 19 of 31 passes for 216 yards with one touchdown and a 92.9 passer rating in a 23-20 victory. In the last four games, McCown has thrown for 754 yards with five touchdowns, no interceptions and a 100.0 passer rating. From week 6 to week 12 in the 2013 NFL season, McCown had the highest passer rating of any quarterback in the league. McCown started week twelve against St. Louis.[30] Against St. Louis, McCown completed a franchise-record 36 passes for 352 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.[31] The next week against the Minnesota Vikings, McCown threw for a season-high 355 yards, completing 23 of 36 passes for two touchdowns and a 114.9 rating. In week 14 against the Dallas Cowboys, McCown threw for four touchdowns and ran for another while completing 27 of 36 passes for 348 yards and a career-high 141.9 passer rating en route to a 45-28 victory. McCown became the first Bears quarterback to score five touchdowns since Jack Concannon in 1972. McCown was eventually named NFC Player of the Week.[32]

Also,1st Bears QB to throw for 300+ yards 3 games in a row.

Yes, if he gets worse this is a bad deal.

People throwing up their arms at the thought of him improving at this point seem to ignore that he improved THIS YEAR. So, he's already improved in the 1st year of this offense.

If he's not consistently in the 92-95+ rating area, then this isn't a great deal. He was over 90 in 7 of 10 games this year. So, you would think familiarity would improve these numbers.

Actually, I don't think he did improve this year. Not really. He posted better numbers with better offensive weapons, which isn't real surprising. Did he look better though? No, not really. He looked like he always looks.

His improvement was marginal at best, and mostly had to do with a hot start in part because of a lack of scouting of the new offense.

He must become elite or near elite for this to be a good deal. He has to play better than he ever has for it even to be considered good to decent.

You seem to still be reasonable. Should be interesting.

When you jump off the Cutler ship, hand Bucky Chris the keys so he can listen to the radio as it sinks.
