If you're keeping him in 6 and 7, you must love him so he's still going to be under market.

Market value is what he would get on the open market. Which, I would guess would have been something closer to Schaub's deal.

$18M over 3 years is NOT a discount.

No, they control him at well above market values for the rest of his effective career.

No way. Look at the list of big $$$ QBs and look at the list of absolute crap I posted upthread.

His stats and track record say otherwise.

Every QB has some shit games. Peyton has had his share, even some in the playoffs.

Dunno. I guess Brady teeters between elite and pretty goddamn good. Earlier in his career I would say elite but now I'd say he's really damn good. I don't watch a lot of PAY-TREE-OTS football, so I guess I'm torn...and a dumbass.

That's an excellent deal for the Bears.

Can't believe Cutler went for that.

Agreed. That is about as good as you could hope for the Bears.

How? Am I the only one capable of doing simple math? He isn't an $18M a year QB and that isn't a discount.

The only people who think Cutler is worth that type of money, are Bears fans who want to believe he is worth that kind of money. No fans of any other team in the NFL thinks Cutler is worth shit. I would guess very few front offices think he is worth that. What the Bears did today is being laughed at by everyone in the league.

It isn't just about simple math tho. It is about the cap hit and length of the deal.

There are plenty of NFL teams who would pay highly for Cutler.

Might be time for a change of scenery for you.

Or course it is.

And you're just being silly because you know somebody would have offered a similar, probably better, contract.

The Bears better have Jay's replacement up and running by the end of year 3 of this deal.

I think this deal proves they must love him.

Everyone was up in arms over the Ryan and Romo deals. Look at the guaranteed money on those deals. Cutler's right there with them. So the Bears got a better deal cap wise?

Not true. There are a dozen teams that wouldn't pay this.

Anyone will pay it only of they want a long tern deal for a QB that is better than avg.

"These deals" just keep happening, whenever any of these QB's come up for one.

Rivers has to be next, right?

Rivers: 8/24/2009: Signed a seven-year, $98.25 million contract. The deal contains $38.15 million guaranteed, including a $19.55 million signing bonus, Rivers' 2009-2010 base salaries, and a second-year option bonus of $6 million. He was paid an additional $5 million "signing" bonus during the 2013 offseason. 2014: $13.8 million, 2015: $15.75 million, 2016: Free Agent

I should stick to thoughtful, eloquent posts.

That's the going rate for a young-ish QB with a rocket arm. It doesn't matter that his talents haven't translated into success at this point in his career. Teams are going to be tantalized by his *potential* and pay up. Again it doesn't matter that he's somewhat unremarkable from time to time - it's just the going rate for a QB with his skill set and at his age.

He already got his guaranteed money through his first two seasons.

Right.

Is anybody really that opposed to having Cutler for a couple years at a little over the tag price?

Yes, I am. In my eyes, the price doesn't really matter. I don't want him at any price. Once you come to the conclusion that a QB is too mistake prone to make it through a playoff run without derailing his team, nothing else matters. Even if no better or equal option is available to the team right now, if you believe you can't win with Cutler at QB, it's time to move on. But they have decided to go forward with a guy who will win enough games to contend for a spot in the playoffs in most years. So they will sell out Soldier Field and remain a "respectable" team. But they will never win a Championship with Cutler. So keeping him only means remaining okay, rather than taking a chance and possibly being bad for a season or two.

Point taken. Let me say this: he's not getting this deal at 32 or 33. What also was in his favor was the lack of philosophical/system consistency. They would have given this deal to Cutler, and only him, due to the circumstances that characterized his past four years here.

22.5+15.5+16 yearly gives you the 54 guaranteed. And if they keep him for the duration they are either foolish or have whiffed on his replacement. But there's no way they keep him for the whole deal.

I guess that's the tradeoff for only a 3 year deal.
