They can IIRC. If they did it would cost them a lot more for the 3rd tage

I thought 2 years was the max.

I could be wrong. Either way it would have been cheaper to tag him twice. That cap hit next season is beyond foolish.

Franchise Cutler for 2 years and let the "QB whisperer" draft a QB to develop. That was my ideal scenario. Cutler is what he is. I think they are being foolish thinking he is going to somehow jump to an elite level at age 31 and beyond.

Only the Cutler-haters are saying this. He doesn't have to become Payton Manning.
He's getting the going rate. They want him to keep doing what he's doing now.

Lack of vision. Trestman and Emery are managing scared.

No, I'd say from what I heard at the press conference they are expecting him to keep improving. Which at age 30, I'm not sure is a good bet. You pretty much are what you are at that point.

Even if they love Cutler they could have had him for at least 2 years at a lower price just by tagging him. That would have provided the team with some protection too from injuries and bad play.

And Staffords, Romos, E. Mannings, Bradfords, Ryans, Big Bens, Flaccos, and from what I've learned in this thread, so are Schaubs and Rivers. Vick once had a crazy contract too.

Sounds like "going rate" to me.

Which is why I wanted Trestman to draft and develop a young QB and franchise Cutler. Frees up a lot of money for other holes.

Come on man, so you're good if he never cracks a 90 rtg (or whatever your stat of choice is)?

I'm good with Cutler as the QB at the going rate.

WAY too many years playing the revolving-QB game.

I hope that's not why they did this. Talk about decision making out of fear.

The fear of not having a legitimate starting QB year after year in the NFL is not a legitimate one?

Look at the AFC South, minus Indy right now.

Not hooray but it is a savings over the Franchise Tag. That means they would have more money to work with. I would be okay with that. How many players will make $22.5M next season? How do you fill holes when you don't have any $$ to spend?

I hope they are scared.

I've been going postal in my living room for 30 years watching this quarterbacking play.

Matt Schaub was what we want Cutler to be numbers wise until this season.

Sounds like "going rate" to me.

Stafford - $15M per
Eli - $16.5M per (2 rings)
Ryan - $18M per
Big Ben - $13M per (2 rings)
Flacco - $20M per (coming off SB win)
Schaub - $13M per
Rivers - $14M per
Romo - $17M per

Romo is overpaid, but at least he puts up top 5 QB stats. Flacco was on the verge of a shit contract until he pulled that SB out of his ass. The "going rate" look for a guy like Cutler, whom is arguably the worst out of all those QBs, is about $13M per. They way overpaid.

They are going to let Peppers and probably Tillman go. That would give them $11 mil more next year than this year to rebuild the defense with no glaring offensive weaknesses to address.

You've got a lot of patience. I would have found a new team to root for during the Krenzel/Quinn/Burris years, if I had already had twenty-some years under my belt.

You didn't like Jim McMahon? Harbaugh? Tomczak? Kramer? Jim Miller? Rex Grossman for a season? It wasn't all bad.

Cutler's cap hit this year was $11M. His new contract eats up that savings from cutting Peppers and Tillman.

I was going back to McMahon.

If I went back to Phipps, Avellini, and Evans it would have been much longer.

Which is why they hired a offensive and quarterback developing head coach. To find the next legitimate starting QB. Which they better be working on.

I hope they aren't counting on the division being handed to them like it was this year. Ain't gonna happen. Now you've given a bunch of money to a QB when you have numerous holes to fill.

How? What type of math are you using? Have you taken into account the deal the Bears gave Jennings and others? They just gave Cutler $14M more than his cap number was for 2013 too. At this point I'm starting to think you are trolling me. They gave him money for 3 year that they didn't need to. There were cheaper routes that they had complete control of.

From what I could find, Cutler was 11, Peppers just over 14, and Tillman 8. Total around 33.

They still would take a cap hit for some of Peppers salary. I believe they would save $5M by cutting him.

You're right. Peppers has 8 mil in dead money.

So 3 mil left extra from this year to rebuild.

Tillman has no dead money.

It's just the anti-Lovie era.

Money is all spent on O and just enough $ on D to be serviceable. They weren't serviceable this year.
