To clarify: based on the above speculation, the idea is that you backload the contract for big dollars. If you win Superbowls, you have the option of keeping him in year 6 and 7. The base salary in the first five years starts very low, and grows over time, with the bonus money prorated over 5 years so as to minimize the cap damage in any given year.

If it's indeed structured this way, it's great in year 1, because it's only a $12M cap hit. The downside would be that you're basically married to him until year 5, which is sort of the situation we find ourselves in with Peppers right now, where we can cut him, but a big portion of the cap hit will remain based on his prorated bonus money.

I think it's a good bet that this is pretty close to the actual contract structure.

This isn't the structure, is it? It was first reported but is wrong. I heard it was 22 million cap hit the first year. 10 in bonus and 12 in base. The Bears want to take the big cap hit this year and then have it friendly for them for the next 2 or 3 years of the deal.

I think the last 2 years are correct as you have it. Straight salary. No bonuses anymore. Which means when if you cut him, you get all that cap money back.

You're not necessarily dead if you cut him in year's 4 or 5. Cuz it would likely mean you have a rookie QB not making much so you can kind of take that 10 million of dead money. But you would be getting back 7 and 8 million of his base salary in those years. Not ideal, but you'd have a cheap QB replacing him in theory. So more money to spend because of that.

I think he'll be good for 5 years so it won't be a factor. He'll be playing for them for at least 5 years.

Average fans are usually idiotic meatballs to be ridiculed, but once in awhile they are trusted sources.

The Score is really shining today. Between Spiegel grabbing some phony numbers and passing them off as "from a trusted source" and li'l danny acting as if he was at the heart of the Penn State story with his boots on the ground in State College rather than just some blowhard with a radio signal and an Internet connection, this is a watershed day in station history.

I agree.

Now the Cutler haters wish the Bears would have franchised tagged him for 3 consecutive years at $60M instead of signing a long term deal that guarantees 3 at $54M. That is really sound advice - I'm not sure why every team wouldn't do that with their long term QB.

Let's make a list of teams that have already done that with their QB:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

Of course the contract doesn't make sense if the Bears are trying to figure out how to get out of it in the 1st year.

They don't want to! They like him and structured a deal to try to keep him for a long time. Hate it if you want to but they know Cutler's floor. In a bad offense he's won 58% of his games. I'm sorry he won 1% of the games and the team won the other 57%. However you want to look at it.

They think he'll be better with continuity in the offense for the first time in 5 years for him and some solid weapons around him.

Peyton Manning's best career year was his 7th. He improved significantly in his 7th year.

Drew Brees best year was his 9th or 11th.

Tom Brady was his 8th.

The thought that a QB never gets better after his 7th or 8th year is silly.

Cutler had Martz for 2 seasons. The rest of this was really silly. I really can't believe you tried to make the connection to THOSE quarterbacks. WOW!

I agree he won a lot with a bad team and lots of it was because of him. Why is it when they are good they don't win? He just seems to fall short to me. I don't think it's in him, it's just not there.

The comparisons were silly. Cutler is a mediocre QB and he was mediocre last season. Those players were great and have been great just about every year of their career. That's not peaking either. The rules changed to benefit offense and QB. They've taken advantage of it and Cutler hasn't.

This could work out of the Bears in a few ways. I think Cutler will be better next season IF he stays healthy. IMO his best season by far as a Bear was his final year with Martz. He appeared to "get it" and was playing at a high level before his hand injury and Forte's injury killed the Bears season. That also happens to have been his 2nd year in the offense. He may approach 5000 yards next season and 40 touchdowns.

I hate the fact that Cutler is getting $22.5M next season BUT if he is playing at a high level he will have a deal that is easy to trade IF the Bears chose to. Probably unlikely but I believe Emery and Trestman's jobs are tied to what Cutler does in 3 years.

If the Bears don't make the playoffs next season it is highly unlikely the Cutler Ass Lickers Lodge (Bucky Chris/Dr Ken/Frank/Spanky) will find fault with anything he does. They will likely blame the defense or a possible decline from Matt Forte. At this point it's probably best to dismiss just about anything they post about Cutler. Their next logical thought about Cutler will be their first.

For the first time on this board I want to part of something. I want to be in the Cutler Ass Lickers Lodge. Just because I don't post about him 150 times a day (wow people) doesn't mean my tongue isn't all up in his shit. Someone please PM me (I'm sure I can figure out how to open it) the time and location of the next meeting. I'll buy and wear a Jay Cutler jersey for a week as my initiation.

If the Bears don't make the playoffs next season it is highly unlikely the Cutler Ass Lickers Lodge (Bucky Chris/Dr Ken/Frank/Spanky) will find fault with anything he does.

You got all white balls so you are in.
