This sounds like a shot across the bow to Ike. He better watch his back, the Chinese government is starting to take notice.

No bulb can last 100,000 hours. The technology just isn't there yet. It may get there, but any company that makes or sells a bulb today and tells you it will last 100,000 hours is incorrect.

An LED can most certainly last that long. Absolutely.

While I know the start of this thread is spam, I was actually reading the story somewhere else.

And I have used these LED products, while they last longer, it sure isnt 100,000 hours.

Dont even think it was 10,000

LED's are different in type and quality. Sure you will have a few that will last 100 hours or even just 1. For the most part though it is possible to last that long. Another aspect is LED color. What makes an LED have a different color if not using some sort of cover is the material used in the PN junction. This creates a different hue based on that material being energized. Back in the day germanium was mostly used and they were red later green as well. Not sure what is used in the household and flash lights these days.

Edit. Gallium not Germanium my brain is frozen today.

I was hoping this board could get into a good argument about LED lights. Frank may actually sound knowledgeable.

It can, but it likely won't. Most of the reputable manufacturers are putting average life hour ratings of anywhere from 30,000 - 60,000 hours, which is much more reasonable if not expected. Most of the ones we sell are rated at 40-50 thousand average hours.

The ones that say "20 year warranty" will typically have in the fine print that the bulb will last 20 years when run for 3 or 4 hours a day. I don't know many businesses that only have their lights on for just a few hours a day.

True. I was just reading up on the newer ones because I didn't know the material they are using. It seems power management and heat are issues with the newest LEDs use for white/blue spectrum. The article also stated that when needed to be used in high lighting situations they are not really as energy efficient as compact fluorescents. SO youre numbers look good as mine were thinking the household type newer ones were not having the heat issues which has to lower lifetime.
