Isn't the San Diego Chicken not, in fact, the Padres' official mascot, but just a man in a chicken suit who appear in the vicinity of Padres games?

Sort of. I think he was hired by the Padres for a number of games over the years in the late '70s that led to his nationwide popularity. Then there was some kind of legal issue about it that led to him not being able to call himself The San Diego Chicken.

That led to a rebirth as The Famous Chicken complete with an on-field hatching and subsequent regular status on Johnny Bench's The Baseball Bunch.

I might be off on some of that but I think it's close. I remember it was always a big deal when The Chicken was coming to Wrigley as a yout'. There's only so many Rich Bordi blown no-hitters that one could watch back in the day.

I am confused. All of this hand wringing about a mascot? No wonder they can't do anything to the stadium or scoreboard and so on without bitching.

As a Cubs fan I am insulted by this stunt.

The Maple Leafs' mascot is named Carlton the Bear because Maple Leaf Gardens was on Carlton Street. And then there's Youppi!, and no one has understood his name.

I get the jokes, but he isn't even going to be in Wrigley. This is for charitable stuff like meeting sick kids in the hospital. Apparently he will also be outside the gates greeting fans and at one place inside the grandstands to meet kids. But no one will see him on the field or anything. Not really a big deal to me... I think my kids will really like it.

Yeah, I know. My daughter said he's cute.

Because the Cubs have done nothing else noteworthy this offseason.

I like the charitable angle of the mascot. Just kind of smacks of the "loveable loser" mindset. Whatever.

I would have been all for it if Edwin Jackson was forced to be the mascot.

He would make a much better mascot than pitcher.

I guess there are many Cubs that would make a better mascot than a player.

No offense, EJ. It's just you make the most money.

My EJ bitterness should be directed at Theo and Jed. I'd sign that deal. Who doesn't love free money?

About what? Found it interesting more outrage over a mascot than the baseball itself.

You just seemed to be pretty protective of Cubbie Pedobear.

Ricketts: I'll be slashing payroll to bottom-5 level but ticket prices will stay top-5.
Fans: Oh, that's ok. The Plan!

Ricketts: We have a mascot for kids.
Fans: Oh no! No! No! No! What the hell is Ricketts doing!?!?! He's ruining the Cubs!
