I still don't get the love for him. He always seems like one of the guys begging you to confuse his activity with actual achievement.

He took a veteran team that won with defense (that he had virtually no input in). His one title came in his first Tampa year against his old team that was apparently still using the same terminology and offensive scheme that they ran when he coached them the prior 2-3 years.

After his title run he immediately had two miserable seasons back to back and a number of other years where he was just average at best. What Gruden greatness am I not remembering?

Good point. He was/is a good coach, but his time away from the game has contributed to this inflated perception of him as a sort of NFL-Phil Jackson who will immediately solve every problem of whatever team hires him.

So when do the Raiders just go ahead and fire another coach?

Quote:
Michael Silver ‏@MikeSilver
Mark Davis only offering 1-year extensions, against urgings of his GM and head coach. Raider coaches like Sparano looking to bolt...

To clarify re Raiders: No other NFL team puts assistants in that position if committed to the head coach. So no, this is not normal...

Report: Jay Gruden agrees to become Redskins head coach

The Redskins and Jay Gruden were reportedly making progress toward an agreement for Gruden to become the team’s next head coach when Thursday got underway.

It seems that process has reached its finish line. Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Gruden has agreed to leave his post as the Bengals offensive coordinator to become the head coach in Washington and Jay Glazer of FOX Sports reports Gruden has informed the Bengals that he’s leaving the team.

Gruden interviewed with the Redskins on Wednesday and was scheduled to interview for the top job in Minnesota on Thursday, but it seems the Vikings will have to take things in a different direction. That’s also true of the Titans, who interviewed Gruden on Tuesday and are scheduled to interview Chargers offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt on Friday.

It will be Gruden’s first head coaching job in the NFL, but he has been a head coach in both Arena Football and the UFL. The Redskins are expected to make an official announcement of Gruden’s hiring later on Thursday.

What are the Lions demanding of head coaching candidate? I really can't understand why Lovie wouldn't even entertain the job and why Whisenhunt not turned it down.

Well I think in Lovie's case TB represented the best opportunity to become one step closer to becoming CEO of football operations. Not sure what happened with Detroit and Whisenhunt. I think he's a good coach anyway, so probably better that the lions didn't get him.

If I were a coaching candidate for the Detroit job I would do what I needed to do to get the job. That's the closest team to a championship. Realistically a good coach could have them there with very little roster moves.

Only thing I figure is he started coaching at Vanderbilt. Maybe family or whatever wanted to get back to TN?

Maybe Detroit isn't offering a decent salary and want control over EVERYTHING.

Try talking your wife into moving from San Diego to Detroit. Or from anywhere to Detroit.

The suburbs aren't bad and if you're interested in winning a super bowl then that is the place to go. The Titans have virtually no chance of winning a title.

Titans have some excellent young WR, a good TE, a nice RB group. They are one good draft (QB) from being playoff caliber. I think they made a mistake with Locker.

Actually if Locker can stay on the field, he was pretty good.

Jim Caldwell is now the favorite to land the head coaching gig in Detroit.

Did a combo of  8) 8) when hearing that.

Sorry Chus.

You were correct on that.

There was an early morning caller to M and H today who was tearing into Mulligan for saying he did not fear Jim Caldwell being hired but did fear Wisenhunt. The guy obviously wanted to make it racial but Mulligan never took the bait. I don't think anyone in the division believes Jim Caldwell is the man to turn things around.

I seriously thought about making a Shoutout thread just for the Lions hiring Caldwell. Good to see the team with the most talent in the division will continue to be doomed to mediocrity for the near future. Silly me being worried that they might replace Schwartz with someone competent.

Also it's been hilarious to see the Browns lose out on their obvious top choice and then proceed to badmouth that candidate to the media for a second straight year.

Yeah,I'm shocked by that hiring. He might be the "Mel Tucker" of HC's.
