Nope, I have never been there. Interested, but not looking to drop the $$$ and still feel hungry is my guess.

But due to the current issue of the couple who brought the 8 month old, crying during dinner. Thought I would toss it out there.

Just in case you are unaware, Alinea is the best restaurant in the city, according to many and has the highest awards nationally.

They are all about Gastro molecular dining,

Regardless its expensive and people plan on going here months in advance. They usually sell out tickets 3 months in advance.

Of course the couple claims at the last second the baby sitter cancelled, so they took the kid who cried the whole time and basically ruined the night for the other patrons.

My guess is someone might have an opinion on this being OK? bad? etc.

IIRC, you pay in advance also at about $300/plate, nonrefundable.

Unacceptable. They should take the kid away from those parents.

A fucking baby at Alinea. Where is the 71 year old with his pistol?

Here's a better one. The latest incarnation of Next is "Chicago Steakhouse". I saw Achatz tweet the other day that some asshole bought tickets and then called about accommodations for his "meat intolerance".

I think you can sell or transfer them.

You pay for the experience not really the food. I think the concept is interesting but, I don't know if I'd like it or not.

I'd have no problem if the owner said no kids allowed. If the baby were quiet it wouldn't have been a big deal. I think if I were in their shoes and taking the kid was my only option, I'd have removed myself and the baby til I could calm it down or tagged teamed with my husband. You can't have your kid screaming in any restaurant, especially one like that. It's not fair to anybody else and you have to be aware of those around you.

$700+ for two people to go to dinner seems just radically insane. I guess I'm kinda like you with the pot thing, Spaulding. When something like this is talked about, I feel like there is an entirely different world I'm missing.

It's going to be about $850, Frank, unless you're drinking water.

is this one of those restaurants where they come by and turn the beer bottle so the label is facing toward you, then sweep up your crumbs with a miniature brush ?

For the people that Ike wants to tax it's not insane. :P For everybody else it's a chef, a special birthday, an anniversary, a trip to Chicago or out of towners. People save for it, or use "bonus" money.

What's the most you've spent on dinner or a date? If you totaled all your breakfasts, is it 700?

Not the exact same deal, but had a nice dinner at the Vegas Paris, in the Eifel Tower, view of the Bellagio water show and the couple next to us shows up in their flip flops and jean short with the stroller and crying kid. Guess the sitter cancelled on them before they went on vacation!

Sure, just leave the children with the au pair. I don't want my dinner ruined.

How was it? I think I'd like that better but don't think that's what I'm looking for either.

 If I totaled all of the breakfasts my wife and I have gone to on Sunday mornings, and the blogs my friends and I do, its easily probably over $700. However that is also many different meals in many different locations over the course of almost 4 years. That's quite different than one night at Alinea.

The most I ever spent on one 'date' was probably about $400, but that was dinner, two concert tickets, drinks during and after the concert, and a hotel room downtown.

$850+ is probably at least somewhat close to a mortgage payment for some people. Its just insane to me, that's all. To each their own. If I'm spending almost a thousand dollars on a birthday or an anniversary, it better include some plane tickets and drinks next to the ocean somewhere.

Everest was one of the best meals I've had. If you're going to spend the money somewhere, at least you'll know you're getting a great meal there.

This is their other Chicago place NEXT.

Same deal in terms of the funky food, etc, but they have a steak focus. You can see what times they have and how much.
