Not sure where you are getting your can't miss information from Hawkeye..... but according to Baseball America in 1992 Gary Scott's rookie year he was their 76 ranked prospect.... in 2011 Brent Morel's rookie year BA had him as their 85 ranked prospect..... 76... 85... not sure either of those ranking qualify as can't miss and once you are past the Top 10 to 20 depending on year the rankings tend to be a real grab bag... looks like a pretty good comp to me.[/quote]

Can't argue the ratings - just remember the hype being much louder for Scott back then than what Morel's was.

The Tribune propaganda machine was working overtime on Cubs prospects during that era...guys like Scott, Ty Griffin, Mike Harkey.

Caruso homered to beat the Cubs, so thats that.

Jeremy Reed was a big part of the Freddy Garcia deal, so that worked out great for the Sox. The other two guys...not so much, though I'd guess almost all organizations have these "can't miss" guys that end up being a total bust.

The numbers are Zips projections for WAR. a bunch of 1-2 guys... 2 is "league average regular" ish. The Sox have a bunch of them!

2) There is absolutely no way to statistically extrapolate Abreu's past performance into MLB production. This model seems to fear the answer "I don't know" as they just throw a league average ranking onto all three rookies.

Is this one of those statistical reviews that get exonerated when they are wrong because they are not meant to be used for projection yet the creators always seem to use for projection?

Agreed. Flowers might be close to a 1 with his defense, but after having shoulder surgery there is no way to guarantee he'll be able to get back to that level.

Is he even going to be able to start the season? Also, if they think that Nieto is going to be something, they have to keep him on the roster.

Haven't seen an update but the timeline for return was 3-6 months when he had surgery in September so I would expect Flowers being at spring training.

The White Sox signed RHP Mitchell Boggs to a 1yr/$1.1M contract.

I'm a little surprised he got a major league deal. Boggs was awful last season but was pretty good the few years before that. Coop must have seen something he liked.


In a corresponding move the Sox outrighted RHP Deunte Heath to Triple A which removes him from the 40-man roster.

Dave Cameron listed the 10 best transactions of the off season. The Sox signing of Jose Abreu came in at #4, the trade for Adam Eaton at #6 and the trade for Matt Davidson received an honorable mention.
