just my take, but I think as far as Lolla (and Coachella , etc. ) goes, the majority of the people going to that don't even really care what the lineup is. it's an "event", a "thing" . i would say that in 95% of the cases, the artists appearing there are not exclusive to that fest- meaning they're probably on tour, playing club dates, etc. Look at the 3 headliners for Coachella- Outkast is playing like 100 festivals this summer, Arcade Fire is playing everywhere on gods green earth....so you don't HAVE to go to those events in order to see the people you want- it's just a weekend long party basically

i think Pitchfork is a little different- spanky and i discussed briefly in the concerts thread but take last years headliners- none of them were promoting a current album or were on a tour. to me it makes it a little more unique. not saying the whole lineup is like that, but I feel pretty confident that Pitchfork is going to deliver some fairly unique content, enough that I'm willing to purchase without seeing the lineup . and even last year's lineup, which i thought was probably the worst in recent years- was still pretty damn good...so i can't imagine a circumstance where i'd be super disappointed

I guess a festival like Pitchfork should get a pass as it's pretty affordable in the grand scheme. You're righ that my complaint should be for large festivals. They know they're going to sell the tickets with the NBA throwback, tank top, camelbak, ray-bans and make sure to check-in on Facebook/Twitter crowd no matter who plays. I'd just like to know who's playing before locking up $215+ 6 months before the 1st chain link fence is raised. Or else you'd get stuck watching NIN for the 70th time.

Well yes, I think at this time in 2014, festivals have reached a breaking point
You can go online to Pitchfork, BrooklynVegan, etc. and pretty much every single day there's some regional fest announcing a lineup. Like Delaware has a fucking fest. And they're largely interchangeable. What makes any of them unique? At least Coachella usually plays the reunion/rare performance card. Pitchfork has some fairly unique stuff.
but the rest of them ? It's the same shit - some combination of Arcade Fire, Queens of the Stone Age, Vampire Weekend, etc.

Thats when the Wrigleyville bars have all reserved tables with black tableclothes and the suburbanites come in via mass limos!

Lolla has a blackout rule which means those performing there won't be performing near hear for a sizeable window of time. http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2011-08-06/news/ct-edit-lolla-20110806_1_parkways-foundation-lollapalooza-mark-vanecko

I see the whole "festival" thing heading toward what happened to the mega tour type thing a few years ago.

When Lolla first started out in the early '90's, it was unique as a traveling tour that brought together a lot of bands of the same genre that stopped once in each big city. Soon, there were a dozen of those every year - from Warped to Lillith to Horde to country stuff to.......and then they all went away because they became more and more similar.

Then Lolla decided to do the weekend-long thing in one city instead of a tour - followed by Coachella and Bonnaroo and ACL and the thing in Delaware. And like Bagels said, they are becoming more and more interchangeable. I assume they will kill each other off and a new format will arise. (I do agree that things like Pitchfork are slightly different).

I just pray to Prince that the stupid "cruise with a band" thing isn't the new format. That sounds pretty bad.
