Even the Avs are poised to pass the Hawks at this point. What's the excuse going to be after "they're just resting for the Olympics"? That they're recovering from them? This just isn't a championship-caliber team. Sorry. It isn't. You can't get away with not caring like this for this long.

Should be though. They have the talent.

But they're not buying in. Sadly, it's a defensive league now; even a team running a possession offense still needs to be responsible with the minutes they don't control the puck. But they blow assignments like crazy because they think they can get away with it. Then suddenly they're down 2 to the dumpster fire Calgary Flames, or blowing leads to every team in the league and also Grand Rapids.

They're middle of the pack in goals allowed, 15th or 16th, pretty much around 2.66 on the year. How much of that is on the skaters and how much is on the goaltenders is up to you, but they're giving up a lot of goals this year, far, far more than any of the other teams at the top of the league. St. Louis has been just a hair over 2, Boston and LA have often been under 2. Even the Penguins, who have traditionally gotten by with super-high scoring distracting from spotty defense, are staying around 2.33/gm. It's not on the defensemen themselves so much as just blown coverage from the forwards and softies through Crawford and Raanta (and Khabibulin).
