Over the weekend I read Ted Wells' report. I also got to talk to two former pro athletes (football, basketball) to get some perspective on the matter (we talked Martin and SamMikeWill). Anyone who wants any success in a competitive environment has to have some degree of aggression about them. Martin's problem appears that in grade school and high school (elite private schools) he suffered what many suffer as kids can be vicious (as a parent I can attest to this). College gave him that societal refuge where a person can gravitate and congregate with those of a like mind and spirit, almost the ability to climb back into the womb. However it was in college that both expressed learning the hard reality of sports where as freshmen they got tested for their toughness with direct confrontations from upper classmen.

The world of pro sports is that of a man's world. No room for babies, momma's boys, or pussies. Draft picks (both were) are paid with high expectations both by the front office and the players, the latter feeling that the money spent would more likely be better spent elsewhere.

Martin plays a sport and position where when on the field every 40 seconds he's going to collide with his opponent in a test of will, strength, and determination. He may of had the strength but he didn't have the will or determination, as he suffered both on the field and off the field from mental problems, most notably self doubt. He needed to get professional help but for reasons undisclosed didn't, or didn't take advantage of the opportunity that was presented.

For racial reasons Icognito has become the face of this situation because where's the news in one black player calling another nigga? The taunting? That's for those who sit in the stands to debate because they're the same people rooting and cheering for victory, and that is where the by-product of will, strength, and determination come into play.

Martin should have followed in the family business (law) because despite having the physical size he didn't have the mettle to be a pro football lineman.

Yeah victim blaming!

The things that were said to him were clearly over the line in any portion of society. Of course it happens a lot. That's the problem.

I guess it's just easier to let this behavior to continue because "that's the way it is in a locker room"?

And what was the opinion on Michael Sam?

Except for in the bloodsport you love so much. Bullying is apparently only okay on fall Saturdays and Sundays.

Huh?

Are you saying that a football game is bullying?

You seriously don't think the game, by its very nature, is bullying?

Okay. Well, agree to disagree. But I don't know what else you would call one man trying to assert physical dominance over another man.

I dont mind this situation being evaluated on its own, but all the "Bully stoppers" can go fight another fight, because this situation is not part of their plight in life.

Bullying among 300 lb+ guys who are essentially paid to bully the other team and do everything possible to impose their will on others might just result in some bad attitudes, if you cant see how that can happen, then you are just using this situation to further your own agenda of little timmy being bullied at lunch by the other kids on the playground.

No.

John Randall was whispering sweet nothings when he would say...

"I am gonna fuck your wife (he would use her name), then take her home and keep her in my house whenever I want her"

That wasnt bullying

But this looks like 2 guys that hate each other?

It is still bullying though.

I think it's easy to understand why it happens. I am just very uncomfortable in the victim blaming being done at Martin. Just reading some of the things that were said and done to him I don't see how you can't feel bad for him even if he chose a testosterone driven profession.

No. Most sports do not involve one man physically beating the shit out of another. Most sports don't feature fans cheering as one man knocks another to the ground.

If you think Martin was bullied, I'm not sure what you might call this:

How about Martin has something wrong?

Sounds like he participated in some trips to Mike Pounceys house for some "use" or ???? Pot? roids?

Sounds like Martin might have some chemical imbalance and isnt suited for life in the NFL.

This is the worst part. He made sincere efforts to have a good relationship with Incognito and it's being used against him. If Martin was a jerk to Incognito he'd also be called a bad teammate and blamed. There really was nothing Martin could do here besides let Incognitio steal from him and make his life hell and just accept it because "Football players are tough and can be jerks".

Martin just went into the wrong business. If you don't want to be bullied, don't try to make a living as a professional bully.

So every contact sport is bullying?

Football, hockey, basketball(at times), boxing, ufc are all bullying then.

If you don't see the big difference between a physical sport with predefined rules and a guy who is constantly making a guys life a living hell and stealing from him then I don't know what else to say.

Disagree.

I have no problem with players giving each other shit. We are talking about guys who came in on Pearl Harbor day wearing japanese headbands to mock the Asian trainer. That's some twisted shit. I look at this as guys using the "locker room" excuse to justify their twisted mindset.

Boxing and UFC definitely are. Bullying isn't an inherent part of hockey or basketball. At least not to anywhere near the same degree.

I just find it funny that you don't mind in the slightest that a guy is getting his brains scrambled on Sunday, but you take umbrage with him getting his feelings hurt on Monday.

I tend to believe Matt Bowen when he says the Incognito/Martin situation is very much an anomaly. He said most team leaders would tend to squash that shit way before it would get started.

Maybe not to that degree but I get the feeling theres a lot of bullying going on in NFL locker rooms.

Because it's so typically you. The damage to a man is "moral" as long as it is done within the confines of established rules and regulations.

So this is about me?

I just want you to explain why playing in a physical sporting event is the same as bullying.

I never said anything about a "physical sporting event". I'm talking specifically about a game(s) in which bullying is an inherent part of the culture. Like I said, if you truly believe that doesn't describe American football, we'll agree to disagree.

I'm interested. Explain why a football game = bullying. Convince me.

Its about Martin not being mentally strong enough to be in an NFL locker room.

Whether that is due to a medical issue or just his own makeup, he couldnt handle the rookie hazing, the bullying or whatever you want to call it.

I wont call him a Pussy, the guy does take the physcial pain of being an NFL lineman, but he just got sick of the whole thing
