I've been all over the Western and Southwestern 'burbs working this week, and have had it come in loud and clear. Got a bit staticy in Plainfield, though.

The signal cuts out in the Bentley up by Kenilworth from time to time but not enough to switch the dial.

Signal is pretty weak.

Turns out I'm in the group whose car radio stops at 87.9 ...

I don't think many or any stations are at 87.9. It's just kind of there. Kind of like how there's never really a Channel 1.

Did they at least EQ the mics correctly today?

I remember in the early days of FM News 101.1, they didn't figure out/didn't bother to EQ everything for spoken-word and not for music/DJing, and so everything was really boom-y and out of sorts. Randy Michaels is still haunting WGN, I guess.

Mics sounded the same to me today, Baby McNown. Bad. My wife said they sounded okay in her car.... but she wasn't knocked out by the content. I enjoyed the interview H&S did with Troy Murray. I like hockey and hockey people.

it doesnt matter. everyone has grown sick of the score after it was bought by cbs. infinity radio had it goin on, but that is gone. the new score has been awful, loaded with national advertising and corporate mandates that sucked all the local life out of the station. chicago deserves a local sports station, and they just got one again. see ya, cbs, stay off my lawn.

Infinity was CBS, they just changed the name of the radio division. It was the Janet Jackson nipple that made CBS so paranoid.

Listened again to Brandmeier, some lunchtime segment briefly, and the Harry/Spike show -- I think the problem was that a phone call sounds so ridiculously bad on FM compared to the quality of the regular FM talk. I didn't think Brandmeier sounded any different than usual, but as soon as a phone call came on, it was kind of jarring. I think maybe the listener just needs to get used to it. Had a little static at the lunch drive-thru, but as others have stated, not bad enough to change the dial.

At least Mac is being fair and isn't pulling a Chet on "The Game". I'll never forget Chet saying what a failure that The Score would be back in the day.

To be fair, many people said that ESPN would fail too.

Mac is probably already trying to work out a deal to get over there.

He should.

If he waits too long, I think someone is going to cement the spot he wants.

He has to rise up and destroy the evil B&B, sending Terry off into retirement, and Bernstein off to do weather at a Kansas City CBS Affiliate.

They won't give him rhe money.

So, what new frequency will become available for the Game to move into later this year- I hit 87.7 again tonight, no static, just no signal either. Would be just my luck to miss out on a revolution due to geography and low power radio (see chapter three- "the early years at 820AM").

If we're looking at the FM dial, bigfan suggested 95.5, which used to do okay as smooth jazz but has struggled with various Hispanic formats. Hubbard could conceivably part with 100.3, since they seem to shoot themselves in the foot with that station so as not to cannibalize the Mix, resulting in a soulless jukebox that is no things to no people. 94.3 is Christian now but could stand to cash out big; their stick is out in the western burbs so they'd have strong coverage in those Key Demographics.

That's all I see that could be in play. CBS isn't going to sell to the competition so scratch five there, everything below 92 is reserved for non-commercial broadcasters, and anything else on the dial is either as solid as solid's gonna get in radio here (Loop, Drive, Kiss, Mix, WFMT) or is a suburban signal and thus useless.

EDIT: of course, there's WLS-FM; why, it's hardly as if 94.7 hasn't been known to change formats from time to time!

EDIT 2: super-mega-longshot possibility is that they get a permit to put a station at 99.1, which I think is the only open frequency in Chicago. If you count up by .4s starting from 92.3, you'll recognize a lot of those frequencies except for 99.1, which is WMYX out of Milwaukee and seems to be rather strong as far as FM signals go. If I recall, you can get spotty reception in the north burbs. I don't know if the FCC won't let Chicago have a station at that frequency, and I don't know why their signal is so powerful. But maybe that's an option.
