C Adrian Nieto has been told he'll make the White Sox Opening Day roster.

I know they really like him but wow. The Nats must be asking a ton in a trade. Nieto will be making the jump from High A to the bigs and I don't see how he can stick on the major league roster all season unless Flowers catches 130 games and nobody wants to see that.

The thing about that is he's almost surely not ready. Catchers usually take longer to develop anyway. And good ones are hard to find. I wouldn't want to dump him just based on this season. It wouldn't be so bad if you had a Pierzynski type who could catch 150 games. Or if you weren't running The Konerko Farewell Tour and could afford to carry an extra catcher.

Hungry and hurried, I stopped in for a quick slice even though the clad-wearing staff, over-the-top kitsch, and heat-lamp setup all should have pointed me elsewhere. The veggie thin crust was the worst pizza I've ever had, with a congealed pound o' cheese hiding canned mushrooms, a listless freezer-bag-style veg medley, and pointless crust. Fresh out of the oven, perhaps this pizza is better, meaning merely horrible.

He seems to be a possible prospect, although that's not saying much (maybe #30 in the Washington system). It's not as if they are keeping him at the expense of somebody better.

He's definitely a prospect but the thing about prospects is they have to play. A lot. Sitting on the bench watching others play baseball will do nothing to help his development.

Does the rule 5 thing mean he has to be on the roster all year or just a certain portion at the beginning?

I would call him a questionable prosepect, that's probabably generious being #30 in the Washington farm system. The White Sox are taking a chance because they have no other options. Flowers will get the majority of playing time, but he'll get into a few games a week, I agree, not what you would want from a younger player on the roster, but, they probably don't think he's MLB ready either so they aren't going to overuse him.

He needs to be on the roster the entire season though I'm not sure if they 'DL' him from time to time and give him a rebab assignment before calling him back up. If he shows himself to be completely overmatched, I'm sure this will be an option before offering him back to the Nationals.

I don't believe that's true. The only reason he isn't more highly rated is his youth and lack of experience.

He hasn't graduated single-A after five years. Safe to say he's not a huge prospect.
