I have had bad parent experiences at swimming...yes swimming.

If I were to accept everything I hear from parents, even parents that I like and trust, I would think every kid is a well adjusted A student with superior athletic skills. I just kind of giggle to myself like an insane man during most of my "parents talking about kids" interactions. I always try to drive the conversation into people talking about what THEY do. There are some people who cannot hold that conversation.

I had a mother confide in me the other day how upset she is with her husband for coaching SIX baseball teams while being underemployed and forcing her to be the primary breadwinner. That conversation was a little to heavy for me. I assume she doesn't know me well enough and thought I'd be a sympathetic shoulder to cry on because of my publicly charming personality.

According to my facebook, every kid of every person I know gets Straight A's on every report card (which is weird because I know some of these schools dont even give letter grades)

My favorite story is from my friend. His kid is the best pitcher in the park league. Travel teams beg him to let his kid play. He has always refused. He knows what he is doing as a pitcher and figures he is the best coach the kid will get, which is probably true. He also works with the kid all the time. Anyway, coaches came to him again this year. He turned it around on them and said yes but he will only come to games he is pitching and I am only paying 1/3 of your normal fee and we will never travel out of state. That was acceptable to more than one coach.

That seemed great to me. Fuck them. These teams want to make it semi pro, they will get treated like semi pro when a person has leverage.

Yep, that is teaching your kid good values. How to be a good teammate and how to be a prima donna.

I think you're confusing summer teams with elite travel teams. Sure high school kids play on summer teams who travel around the area but there are only a few travel teams who play in national tournaments and showcases. Kids have to try out or be invited to play on these teams because the national tournaments are where the pro scouts and college recruiters are. A very high percentage of those Kids are playing at the next level.

I'm not confusing anything. I am completely aware there are a handful of teams with D1 athletes at every position. They are the exception and not the norm. There are plenty of bad "elite" club teams who travel all over and cost a lot of money.

The system develops prima donnas. He has shunned that system. Now he is mocking it. The kid is fine.

I just know that not all kids and parents are the way you have described. My son enjoyed his team and we both have great memories from the events.

Also, that kid is not fine. Just wait til the arrangement gets out and see how the other kids take that.

Hawger,

The Mrs and I have no interest in giving up an entire summer worth of week ends to traveling baseball. Our son was offered a play when you want deal last year. e had a foreign exchange student or we may have taken them up on it.

My goal even at a young age is to develop girls to get them to HS and make their team. If I can do that, I've succeeded.

Seacrest, that is fine, I just disagree with some of the way the people are portrayed. Like everything else, it is not for everybody and that is ok. I am just saying the experience we had was a lot of fun and life time memories.

Dam near every high school baseball player is a travel baseball player.

Quick search from multiple sites put the number at 5-6% will play some where between D1- and D3. D3 is completely non scholarship. We could throw NAIA into the mix and less than 5% of high school seniors will receive any money to play in college.

D3 doesn't give 'scholarships' but they do give preferred financial aid etc. I was speaking to a kid who just got a 95% package for Robert Morris to play baseball. D3 actually makes more money available than most D1 programs for softball/baseball.

On these travel team trips, how much time do the adults spend getting trashed at the hotel, and the single moms wake up in someone elses room?

I don't know about the single moms we never had that happen, the adults have a good time.

Why doesn't everybody just make sure there kid throws left-handed. That should save time and money. They don't even have to be athletic to do it.

Robert Morris is in a different position as it is a "for profit" institution.

Well now you can say you've "heard" that. When my son was younger that was exactly what I said. That it was so much fun to him mattered/matters most.

Sports was one of the biggest factors in my "success" in high school. I was much younger, smaller (than my classmates) & as a result didn't really fit in well until sports helped me build my own confidence. The college part of the equation for my son didn't really begin to factor in until he played his first game, drove in 2 runs, scored 1 & went to the mound w/a one run lead, but the bases loaded w/no outs in the top sixth. And then got a double play, & four strikeouts....against Ignatius in a Sophmore game.

Oddly enough I just got finished sending a return email to one of the schools interested in my son. :D
