Sweet.
I am so glad I got to hear you getting free promotion for like 4 hours today. TOTES BRO
I can't wait to hear how you did pretending to become someone else.
I GUESS YOU WON'T BE ON THE AIR FRIDAY.

I know they're good.
But really, I hate the "become x band" because... well, you're not becoming them. You're doing friggin covers.

So they're becoming the world's most popular cover band. Fitting.

a favorite radio memory of mine was when Stern read a report about a Doors cover band. The lead "became" Jim Morrison by going through the crowd and into the rafters of the club. He fell from the ceiling and was heavily injured

yes that's why i mentioned it.... i remember when he was promoting p-funk on the show i shared my story about meeting the guy on the green line who boasted that it was his responsibility to pick up the 20-30 crack rocks for the parliament chicago tour stops because those guys go and hit the pipe backstage when they rotate out for a song or two. i questioned spiegel's commitment to truly "become" p-funkadelic accordingly =D

(and yeah i know, but it seemed an awfully odd and specific thing for someone to boast on a green line train. if they were that creative and clever, odds are they're prolly not much of a crackhead? c'est la vie)

try as they might parliament funkadelic never made anything nearly as good as this song. but then again i'm LOL SO NOT GEEK OF THE YEAR XDDDDDD biased cuz i made my own t-shirt out of my 7" of that record =D

My favorite aspect of this is that Grimace can't/won't sing about 95% of the Zeppelin stuff. He's admitted as much on the air a while back. So, they'll have some other dude who actually has some range, or probably a chick because all these bands are lazy and just go to a chick to sing this stuff and Journey etc. Too hard to find a dude who can actually hit some notes in the upper register apparently.

Somebody has to go to this thing and report what Grimace does. I think he'll do his little waddle shimmy shake and just be generally useless during this whole thing.

I hope he plans on literally becoming John Bonham.

If you can't sing Zep songs, what are you doing as the vocalist for a cover band?

Not really, because John Popper is one of the best harp players ever.

The fact that Caddyshack is one of the most quoted movies doesn't make it good.

I never understood the hatred and hair splitting over Meat's band. So he sings in a cover/tribute band. Who cares?

They're not a cover band. They are "becoming" that band.

You would think when they "become" these acts that they would dress the part. I'd love to see Spiegal pull off a Prince outfit. Do they make lace that big?

I can tell you where my negative opinion comes from. Musicianship-wise and everything, I'm sure they are very good. I just cannot stand how pretentious Grimace comes across about it. And how he hypes it. And how he acts like he just did 4 nights in a row at MSG and has to take 3 days off as a result of doing some bar gig. It's just a fucking cover band. There are about 1000 of them around town. There's just an arrogance that comes from him about it. I got news for you Grimace, you aren't that fucking special.

He's like this with everything. Everything is very serious and sacred. To mock anything is blasphemy.

"We're sort of like musical anthropologists."

"There's still a lot of low-hanging fruit even four years in. There's no end to what we can do."

"It's our joy. We're hearing it come together for the first time. The gigs are great, of course, but those Mondays are our secret little thing."

"There are some things that are more difficult and commercially successful. Writing original songs is more gratifying on some level. But this is so much damn fun because we invented it and perfected it. The fact that we let the music speak and then poof! -- it's gone -- manages to somehow give us artistic integrity in a cover-band framework. We've got something magical here, and we have to protect it. We don't want to suck any of the joy out of it."

"We consider ourselves to be the Civil War re-creationists of music. We're paying tribute to the song and the artist, but we serve the song. At first, we were sort of like a secret club but now it's not so secret anymore."

Meh. The most egotistical musicians I've met are "local" cover band types (except for the surviving members of Warrant. Those guys were HUGE big-timers). It's crazy. I hung out and talked to Vinnie Appice when we opened up for Kill Devil Hill and he was awesome, but some of these local dudes act like they're Dick Clark's receptionist. "hey, what's up, man?" "....and, you are?"

Sounds like Matt is proud of his gig and there's nothing wrong with that. Dude plays sold out shows (which ain't easy, no matter what kind of band you are) and has a "forum" to promote his shows. Can't find fault with that, personally... but he does have an air of pretension to him, but I'll bet that would exist whether he was in a band or not. That could be me projecting from reading all of the derision for him on this board...
