Imo, Evan Williams (especially considering the price) is wildly underrated. I occasionally will grab a half gallon for $19.99 and think that until you're talking premium whiskeys, (Maker's/Gentleman Jack/etc.) I'll take this one.

Fwiw (especially given the above paragraph  ), I've never thought Single Barrel Jack comes close in value to Gentleman Jack. As a result I don't think I've even had Single Barrel in 10-12-15 years.

Like I said, I doubt that I've had any in maybe 15 years. Perhaps my tastes have changed, maybe its that 15 years ago(wife, first child, second in the planning stage) I was considerably more averse to spending an extra $15 on a bottle of whiskey, I don't know.

I never said it wasn't good, just overpriced imo. Besides, back in those days if I was drinking whiskey, it often came with a maduro pyramid & while reading a book. I doubt I was noticing the finer taste points of anything I was drinking then. :alien:

Amen. Been saying this for years. Jim does not burn the back of my throat as bad either. Something is different. Charcoal?

I have known that to be a fine off brand Jack since age 20.

Change of plans. we're having spaghetti tonight, so whiskey wasn't in the cards. stopped at Binny's and got a handle of Tanqueray for a martini w/ blue cheese olives which I make my own of course. Stopped up in Mauston WI and got some cheese at the Carr Valley shop they have up there.

Jack Daniels is charcoal filtered once. Gentleman Jack is filtered twice leading to a smoother whiskey. Single Barrel is achieved by taking barrels of Jack Daniels and moving them to upper levels of the building, causing them to mature quicker and more fully. Single Barrel is also more potent, clocking in at 94 proof versus 80 for old no 7 and GJ.

To me, I prefer the bolder, more wood based flavors of the single barrel.

Jim Beam is bourbon. With the exception of the green label, it is not charcoal filtered. My favorite offering by them is the Devil's Cut. 90 proof, lot of wood behind it with the sweet vanilla is great at the price point.

Other good price point whiskeys (for me)
- Old Granddad
- Evan Williams Single Barrel
- Eagle Rare
- Larceny

Old Granddad was the first whiskey I believe I had. I've always considered it an old man's drink though.

Lagavulin is my favorite, but I'll usually have anything that comes from Islay.

I much prefer a blended. And I'm damn sure not going to waste a nice single malt by splashing soda water on it.

Regular Jack is garbage. Garbage.
Gentleman is better.
Jack is just way too starchy.
You boys need to switch to decent scotch.

I had some. Coast2Coast got me to buy a bottle during the Bears SB run and I've had a couple since then.

Jack is great. You can drink it by the bottle. Try that with Scotch and you'd puke.

I've drank a bottle of Jack or more many nights. Honey Jack was the only one I didn't like. It was so sweet I drank it a lot faster than I normally would.

So your money is on Darko?
Good choice. I've been a problem drinker for years. Plus, I love scotch. Plus, I have whiskey stones. Plus... plus.
