over 2013:

http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nf ... n/5910639/

Quote:
The NFL's 2014 salary cap is set at $133 million, the players' association announced Friday.

That's a $10 million increase over the 2013 cap and the largest cap in NFL history, surpassing the $127.997 million cap in 2009, the last capped year under the old collective bargaining agreement.

That doesn't mean much. It hadn't gone up in 5 years. That means the owners cleaned up.

While I will agree with you the typical meathead bears fans uses this criticism way too much, it is also then improperly used by those claiming to have some superior knowledge of the team.

The Bears are a VERY unique ownership structure. They have about 40 families that receive money from football operations. I cant tell you if they rely upon on it, but it is enough money for most of them not to work, so why would you?

Over 80% of the shares of the Bears have been distributed to various family members, but none have voting rights. I assume this was done as to avoid losing the Bears when the old lady dies due to inheritance Tax.

Now, because they distribute so much cash, they dont keep much cash on hand and thus dont pay many signing bonuses. Sure, they can easily acquire the cash. Mike Mccaskey can "LOAN" the team money, and I am sure even he feels it is a very low risk, as he would get it paid back the next year. regardless, it is a step that most teams dont need to consider.

Additionally, The Mccaskeys dont have another business to support the football operation. They didnt make millions outside of football and neither have the cash or a an ongoing business to help create cash.

So the fact the NFL itself makes sure that all teams stay within a $23 Mill payroll of each other, doesnt allow a team to SPEND more, SPEND less more than another team in terms of simple payments. You need to be aggressive and creative to make such payments and while the Bears are creative, I dont think they do so to win, I think they do so to make sure they dont GO OVER THE CAP....instead of pushing the limits of the cap.

However, the NFL does allow teams to SPEND as they wish on a stadium and I think we can all agree, there isnt a worse place to play football than Soldier Field. Its terrible for the fans, player and even the owners.

So when you really get to look at TEAMS SPENDING MONEY, we all know the Bears "FAMILY" is on the bottom of the pile because they need to milk the team to support the families.

And if they sold the team, it would end up being to someone who met his wife by one of the colonnades.

Mac had some old timer today told story of how George Halas had an employee up in the bleachers at Wrigley to catch the field goals so the fans wouldn't get the footballs!

Back then my grandfather would sometimes get the ball, run out of the stadium, chased by security & take the ball to a friend's house a block away. Then he'd go back & get in w/ his stub, like nothing happened & watch the rest of the game.

an additional $10mil bump to the salary cap? it's like the football gods want the 2014-15 bears to keep pep!

also, btw man.... i swear to god when i heard a late ZZ hit on b&b they were talking about mel tucker and intermittantly through zack's constant "nobody could succeed with the players on defense last year, that wasn't a mel tucker problem!" i heard FOTStein and others absolve mel tucker of blame by saying that the bears gave him "a vote of confidence" (which prolly =/= advocating he keeps the job, just like matt assaholea didn't do when he only said that the bears shouldn't fire mel tucker, that's in no way advocating that mel tucker keeps his job. duh) and rah rah rah "mel doesn't even have the most access with the players" and i swear to god i heard somebody say that "the bears got one of the best defensive coordinators in the NFL when they got mel tucker"

i mean that whole part where mel inherited a good defense and in his first year as a DC had a #4 defense, and then the next year with no significant aging/injury/personnel-changes he had a #26 ranked defense.... that was probably because there was an upheaval at position coaches and therefore since mel doesnt actually deal with the players and he's one of the best DCs in the NFL, well it had to be somebody else's fault.

i bet that mel tucker could walk into a police station and shoot the chief in the face and people would come up with excuses as to how it's not mel tucker's fault, it's more about socioeconomic problems leading to his stress levels to rise, and then his wife (who has the most direct access to his problems) exacerbated them and got him to the point where i think any red blooded man in the world would walk in there and shoot the police chief point blank in the face, you can't blame that on mel tucker!

at this point if they mistakenly let anyone get on the air with an anti-mel-tucker position i almost wanna hear the hosts plug their ears and start saying LALALLALALALALALA CAN'T HEAR TOU?!?! WHAT'S THAT? ALL I HEAR IS LALALALLALALALA AND STAY TUNED FOR BEARS ALL ACCESS ON THE BEARS RADIO NETWORK!

#Synergy. that's what it's all about. the bears don't want the public turning on their DC whose contract they dont wanna eat this year? message goes out to all the talking heads to ease up on mel because the personnel had injury problems and nobody could have done anything with that mess last year. get the message out and install the opinions in everyone's heads because this is the bears message and zach zaidman is our pied piper..... or a really shit player of the game "lemmings" who is going to eventually lead us off of a cliff.
