Took a nasty hit early in the Penguins game. Well, that sucks a lot. Hope to have him back for the playoffs, I guess.

Am I wrong (probably) in thinking that they may want to move forward without him after this season? I mean, I love what he has brought, and he has been pretty productive up to this point of the season, but he seems to have maybe lost a step. He's 35, and he's not going to get any better ( :drunken: ), and the injuries are piling up. I see diminished returns looming for the money being spent.

From what I gather from my limited limited research, couldn't they buy him out after the season and not suffer future cap hits due to the CBA? It may be the least costly out they have if that's the case.

Set me straight, and yes, I'm a dumbass.

"Shoulder" is NHL front-office speak for "concussion" :P

Better he get his yearly injury sabbatical out of the way now and get back relatively healthy for the playoffs rather it happening 3 or 4 weeks from now and and knock him out for 2 rounds.

Set me straight, and yes, I'm a dumbass.

They used their compliance buyouts on Olesz and Montador. They could use a standard buyout, but they would have to carry dead cap space for twice the remaining years of his contract. According to Capgeek, the structure of his contract means $5.4MM in dead cap space on the dummy years, then $1.33MM DCS for the seven years after his contract would have ended. That's a lot.

Capgeek wrote:
Marian Hossa is 35 years old on the buyout date of June 15, 2014, setting the buyout ratio at 2/3 and the total buyout cost at $15,866,667 spread over 14 years. His contract was originally valued at $63,300,000 beginning in 2009 and ending in 2021, with $23,800,000 remaining from the buyout year forward. The following is a season-by-season breakdown of the buyout. A negative buyout cap hit indicates a credit.

Marian Hossa buyout from CapGeek.com
2014-15: -$1,491,667
2015-16: -$1,491,667
2016-17: $2,408,333
2017-18: $5,408,333
2018-19: $5,408,333
2019-20: $5,408,333
2020-21: $5,408,333
2021-22: $1,133,333
2022-23: $1,133,333
2023-24: $1,133,333
2024-25: $1,133,333
2025-26: $1,133,333
2026-27: $1,133,333
2027-28: $1,133,333

The credit years are tempting, but not enough to carry dead space through TWO THOUSAND AND TWENTY-EIGHT. That's like Bobby Bonilla shit.

Thanks for the clarification. I thought the Olesz/Montador buyouts counted for 2013, not 2014, but, anyway...

So, unless he retires or is traded (ha!), they are pretty much stuck paying full boat until he's 42 or so?

I contend that he was nowhere near 100% coming into this season after he was semi-paralyzed during the playoffs, so I doubt he was that healthy to begin with.

Still, a good season up to now, but you wonder just how much he has left.

Every team got two compliance buyouts under the new CBA. Once they're gone, they're gone. Any further buyouts cost cap space.

The other problem with the Hossa contract is the recapture penalty if he retires under contract. All the money they saved by having his payroll exceed his cap hit will come back to bite them for any years of his contract he doesn't play. The only recourse the Hawks have with him is to Pronger him: once the injuries have piled up too high, he goes on LTIR every year until his contract is up.
