Jarrett Payton, former NFL running back and son of Bears legend Walter Payton, has been hired as afternoon co-host at Tribune Broadcasting sports/talk WGWG LP 87.7, station officials confirmed Monday.

Starting Wednesday, he’ll join Harry Teinowitz and Spike Manton from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday on The Game 87.7 FM.

“I think Jarrett is way more than sports royalty in this town,” said Todd Manley, vice president of creative content at The Game. “He’s the sort of creative, inventive mind that will help us define the future of this brand.”

Payton, 33, grew up in the northwest suburbs and played for the University of Miami, where he was named MVP of the 2004 Orange Bowl. His pro football career included a season with the NFL Tennessee Titans and stints with NFL Europe, the Canadian Football League and the Indoor Football League. Since retiring from the Chicago Slaughter in 2010, he has headed the Jarrett Payton Foundation and marketed a craft beer, Jarrett Payton All-American Wheat Ale, brewed by Argus Brewery.

His previous radio work included hosting Bears post-game shows for ESPN Radio sports/talk WMVP AM 1000 and podcasting for Chicagoland Sports Radio.

Payton’s sister, Brittney, also is pursuing a media career as host of the weekly “Chicago’s Best” on Tribune Broadcasting WGN-Channel 9, and as a contributor to the NFL network.

The Game debuted Feb. 17 as the FM counterpart of Tribune’s news/talk WGN AM 720, under a local marketing agreement with Venture Technologies Group, which owns the low-power station’s license.

Can I just say that it's a little bit clownshoes for one of Chicago's most academically selective prep schools to be named after a football player? Like, do New York's best and brightest graduate from L.T. High?

You just compared one guy who the NFL uses as an example for its MAN OF THE YEAR award, essentially its top humanitarian award and a guy who plead guilty of raping a teen and pled out of a jail term with probation after he kicked his coke habit. Any difference between the two you just used as a comparison?

Maybe they tried to use an example of someone that might not have been the smartest, best, most gifted but worked hard to become great as an example?

Is rape better or worse than shooting someone?

When Mac goes fishing this summer and Terry retires, the new extended mid-day show on The Score will be Dan Bernstein, Matt Spiegel and Laurence Holmes.

Matt Bowen & LoHo will be breaking down game film while Bernstein is shouting; "The safety doesn't matter!", "The line doesn't matter!", "Nobody matters except ME!"

Meanwhile, Spiegs will be trying to talk about baseball and hoping Mac & Finfer can get him on The Game as well.

Walter Payton was sports royalty in Chicago. Jarrett Payton is not.

Harry still looks like Ann B. Davis. Is he still saying "What's growin' on?" or is there a stipulation in his contract that he can't say that?

i'd have to say no, but there's a good chance that's new york's most high and infamous have a fair chance of graduating from there.
